Notes: Summary The planned network for the Munich subway system has a total length of about 100 km with 106 stations. At present 46 km of subway and 50 stations are in operation. A further 17 km and 18 stations are under construction. The annual volume of construction work has reached a total of approximately 300 million DM. A stretch of 21 km has been constructed using shotcrete support. A part of this work still has to be completed. In the paper, the method of tunnelling using shotcrete is presented in its total context, whereby the important aspects are discussed under the following themes: Overview of the construction project as a whole with reference to finance, permitting procedures and realisation. Cut-and-cover and mining techniques. The construction of single-track tunnel and the excavation of large cross-sections, switches and sidings, different geotechnical procedures in dealing with water, especially compressed air operations. Experiences with contract practices, construction, questions of safety, quality and cost control, damage analysis and comparison of costs.

Notes: Summary An X-ray spectral analysis (EDAX) of isolated undischarged nematocysts of various cnidarians (Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Anthozoa) revealed the presence of extremely high concentrations of divalent cations. InHydra nematocysts both Ca2+ (conc. 0.36 μmole/mg dry cysts) and Mg2+ (conc. 0.80 μmole/mg dry cysts) ions add up to a total in situ concentration of 0.5 to 1.0 M. More than 85% of the cations, which are believed to be involved in cyst discharge, are contained in the soluble fraction of the cysts, where they must be bound to high molecular weight molecules.

Notes: Summary Even though the enhancement of the lyitc capacity and the kinetics of lysis of natural killer cells (NK) by interferon has been well documented, an increase of the target-effector cell binding percentage is still disputed. We, therefore, modified the Grimm-Bonavida single-cell assay so that 400 to 600 cells per individual determination could be reliably evaluated. Using this assay, which makes possible separate determination of effector-target cell binding and target lysis, we demonstrated that, in addition to lytic capacity, target-effector cell binding is also increased by preincubating NK with 100 to 1,000 IU interferon alpha 2 per 106 cells. Our data indicate that interferon alpha 2 induces pre-NK cells to bind target cells and that it activates these pre-NK cells to kill the targets.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Widely accepted plate tectonic models suggest that an inactive subduction zone lies along the north-west continental margin of Sabah. In contrast, interpretation of reflection seismic data acquired by BGR shows an autochthonous continental terrane comprising an Oligocene to Early Miocene carbonate platform being progressively overthrust by an allochthonous rock complex. Progressive compression resulted in the development of four structural zones: Imbricated thrust sheets (Zone III); two thrust sheet systems one on top of the other (Zone IV); a complex zone with multiphase deformation (Zone V); and piercement ridges (Zone VI).

Notes: Abstract Molecular computer graphics (MCG) has become the indispensable complement of experimental chemical and biological tools and, in a way, will shape the evolution of these fields. This accelerated and popularized evolution takes root in the visual, even scenic, grasping of fundamental chemical concepts, perceived as veritable ideograms, which condense a vast amount of information with a few two- or threedimensional graphic symbols. With MCG one can carry out real computerized syntheses of chemical images. MCG is also an ideal tool through which to visualize the changes of a system as a function of time. This review article describes the potentials and advantages of structural MCG for visualizing the basic steps of important modelization concepts, particularly for handling on-line structures in information networks and in computer-assisted drug design (CADD) applications.

Notes: Abstract We report on a photoluminescence study of silicon samples subjected to different dry etching processes. Several luminescence lines, known from defects produced by high-energy irradiation, manifest damage of the crystalline material. Noble gas ion beam etching (using Ne+, Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+) with ion energies as low as 400 eV produces characteristic luminescence lines which correspond to defects within a 200–300 Å thick surface layer. Incorporation of carbon during CF4 reactive ion etching produces the familiar G-line defect. The G-line photoluminescence intensity in our samples is directly correlated with the substitutional carbon concentration, as determined by infrared absorption measurements before the etch process; we therefore suggest that a simple method to determine the substitutional carbon concentration in a crystalline silicon sample is a standard dry etching process and a comparison of the resulting G-line photoluminescence intensity to a calibrated sample. The sensitivity of this method seems to be better than 1014 carbon atoms/cm3.

Notes: Abstract Shallow thermal donors are electrically active oxygen-related thermally formed defects observed in oxygen-rich silicon annealed between 300 ° and 600 ° C. Seven donors have been identified with an average central-cell correction of only 5 meV. In view of their molecule-like nature this close agreement to the effective mass theory prediction for a hydrogen-like donor in silicon is of interest. It is shown that these centres are not correlated to the residual impurities phosphorus and boron but rather to the presence of nitrogen. Nitrogen-doped oxygen-rich samples show increased shallow thermal donor growth and a reduction in the growth of other oxygen-related donors in comparison to normally nitrogen-undoped oxygen-rich samples. A reduction in shallow thermal donor concentration at high nitrogen concentrations is reported.

Notes: Abstract Photoluminescence is studied in silicon, deformed in a well-defined and reproducible way. Usual deformation conditions (high temperature, low stress) result in sharp spectra of the D1 through D4 lines as recently described in the literature. New lines D5 and D6 emerge for predeformation as above and subsequent low-temperature, high-stress deformation. Another new sharp line, D12, is observed when both the familiar and the novel lines appear simultaneously. Annealing for 1 h atT A≳ 300 °C causes all new lines to disappear and the D1–D4 spectra to reappear. Quantitative annealing and TEM micrographs suggest that D5 is related to straight dislocations and D6 to stacking faults, whereas D1–D4 are due to relaxed dislocations. Photoluminescence under uniaxial stress shows that D1/D2 originate in tetragonal defects with random orientation relative to 〈100〉 directions, whereas D6 stems from triclinic centers, preferentially oriented — as are the D3/D4 centers. We conclude that the D3/D4 and the D5 and D6 defects are closely related, whereas the independent D1/D2 centers might be deformation-produced point defects in the strain region of dislocations.
