Notes: Summary. Adjuvant chemotherapy using Tegafur (l-(2-tctra hydrofuryl)-5-fluorouracil) was given to 52 of 216 patients with recurrence risk of cervical cancer after primary surgical treatment, the degree of risk of recurrence having been formulated as a discriminant function by computer analysis of risk factors involved in disease recurrence. Using the formula, we have managed outpatients in three groups—no recurrence and recurrence after, and before 5 years. Under existing circumstances the power of the discriminant function we have achieved is not yet entirely satisfactory although clinically of value in patient management. Oral, long-term adjuvant chemotherapy in risk groups was of value, with a 37.4% instantaneous recurrence rate and mild side-effects. An instantaneous recurrence rate of 37.4% signifies that the recurrence rate in the group of patients given chemotherapy would be 37.4% if it were 100% in the patients not so treated—an improvement factor of just less than 3.

Notes: We measured the spectral and spatial intensity distributions of synchrotron radiation (SR) in the soft x-ray region using an energy-dispersive method with a Si(Li) detector at the Photon Factory. By measuring the intensity of x rays scattered by helium gas, we could reduce the high SR intensity to the sensitivity range of a Si(Li) detector and, by selecting the scattering angle, we used this method as a polarimeter. In the soft x-ray region above 2 keV, the measured spectral and spatial profiles of the direct beam transmitted through a Be window were almost the same as the calculated values, but absolute intensity was about 30% less than calculated. This is largely due to the geometric errors of the measuring system. We also measured the intensity distribution of the beam reflected from fused quartz mirrors. The spectrum profiles agreed with the calculated values, but absolute intensity was somewhat less than expected, and the spatial distribution had a complicated profile because of imperfections in the mirrors.

Notes: Summary A technique employing silica particles was used to remove cells producing endogenous colony-stimulating factor (CSF) to allow measurement of the level of colony-forming units in culture (CFU-C) in human bone marrow cells. In comparison with the glass-adherence technique, this new approach resulted in a more complete degree of removal of CSF-producing cells and formation of more colonies. This method seems to be useful for performing an accurate assay of exogenous CSF.

Notes: Summary An IgG monoclonal antibody to recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), designated HG1, was produced by fusion of immune mouse splenocytes with HAT-sensitive murine myeloma cells. This HG1 was capable of neutralizing the colony-stimulating activity of G-CSF in vitro, and it did not cross-react with human granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measurement of G-CSF was developed using HG1 and a polyclonal antibody against G-CSF raised in a rabbit. The data indicated that the ELISA was highly efficient and sensitive for the detection of as little as 50pg/ml of recombinant G-CSF. This assay system therefore warrants further attention.

Notes: Abstract Surface photometry is carried out for the photometric standard galaxy NGC 3379 on the basis of two plates in the blue band taken with the Bejing Schmidt telescope. The results, including luminosity profiles, photometric parameters, integrated luminosity distribution, ellipticity and position angle variation, are presented in various forms of figures and tables. Especially our geometric profiles, i.e., ellipticity and position angle variations reach up to ≈5′, much fainter region than that any previous study did. The accuracy of the present data is checked by comparing them with the surface photometry in the literature. We find the zero-point ≈0.12 mag brighter than the calibration of de Vaucouleurs and Capaccioli (1979), which agrees with the values 0.10–0.15 mag difference claimed by recent observations. The systematic differences is found to be less than ≈0.1 mag.

Notes: Abstract The spectral signatures of circumstellar dust shells (CS) of late-type stars cannot be tied in a simple manner to their optical spectral features. The spectral indices of featureless low-resolution spectrometer (LRS) spectra of K and early-M (M0-M5) stars are consistent with that of the Rayleigh-Jeans law and those of late-M (M6 and later) stars tend to have lower values showing CS radiation. There is no correlation observed between the optical sub-type and the 10 μm emission strength for M stars. The absence of a simple relationship is also evident for C stars where the temperature and abundance indices show no correlation with the 11 μm emission strength. The sample is confined to the IRC stars identified with accurate spectra observed by the LRS of IRAS. The IRC stars are the whole sky survey done with the 2 μm band, where late-type stars are bright and interstellar extinction is one-tenth of the visual colour band.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. 2. Das scheinbare spezifische Volumen der Zellulose wurde im Zustand von Wasserzellulose, Na-Cell I, Na-Cell II, Na-Cell IV, Hydrazinzellulose I, Salpetersäurezellulose (Knechtverbindung) und Perchlorsäurezellulose bestimmt. 3. Es ergab sich, daß Wasserzellulose, Na-Cell I und Na-Cell II folgende Zusammensetzung besitzen: Wasserzellulose C6H10O5·H2O, Na-Cell I C6H10O5·NaOH·3H2O, Na-Cell II C6H10O5·NaOH·H2O. Ferner ist die Zusammensetzung der Na-Cell IV, Hydrazinzellulose, der Knechtverbindung und der Perchlorsäurezellulose wahrscheinlich wie folgt: Na-Cell IV C6H10O5·0,3 NaOH·H2O, Hydrazin-Zellulose I C6H10O5·H2N NH2·H2O, Knechtverbindung C6H10O5·HNO3·H2O, Perchlorsäure-Zellulose 2C6H10O5·HClO4·2H2O.
