Notes: [Auszug] One approach to search for unrecognized hormone response systems is to systematically employ reduced stringency hybridiz-ation to screen recombinant DNA libraries for novel hormone receptors. The DNA-binding domain of the oestrogen receptor was used as hybridization probe in analysis of a AgtlO ...

Notes: Abstract Corynebacterium diphtheriae usually produces an infection limited to the respiratory tract and the organisms rarely invade the blood stream. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl who, 2 months after an unsuccessful repair of a ventricular septal defect, developed septicaemia with nontoxigenic C. diphtheriae. The organism appeared resistant to penicillin in vitro and failed to respond to a course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to which it was susceptible in the laboratory. A cure was finally achieved using cephalothin and gentamicin, followed by an additional course of ampicillin and amoxicillin. Twelve previously recorded cases of diphtheritic sepsis and endocarditis are reviewed.

Notes: Summary Persistent infections with Sendai and SSPE virus were established in Vero cells. Sequential passages of these cells were monitored by immunofluorescence and for their sensitivity to the antiviral and antiproliferative effects of interferon (IFN). The cells rapidly developed resistance to the antiviral effect of IFN as judged by the inability of IFN to inhibit the replication of exogenous Sindbis virus. This decrease was accompanied by a reduction in the induction of the 2′–5′ oligo A synthetase. Both cell lines were resistant to the antiproliferative effect of IFN. A decrease or absence of IFN receptors on the surface of the cells was not found to be the cause of their resistance to IFN.

Notes: Summary The natural convection of a homogeneous incompressible fluid of grade three is investigated between two infinite parallel vertical plates. The effect of the non-Newtonian nature of fluid on the skin friction and heat transfer are studied.

Notes: Summary Asymptotic expansions of displacements in powers of a small parameter related to the shell thickness are re-derived with a view to investigating the way in which the leading terms depend on the thickness coordinate. The outcome of this preliminary study gives a hint concerning possible kinematic assumptions to be used as starting points for constructing thick shell theories. Then the problem of reducing the number of independent generalized displacements by enforcing all or part of the traction boundary conditions on the shell outer and inner surfaces is studied. Several thick shell theories are proposed and compared; the superiority of a certain generalized Kirchhoff-Love assumption is brought out in the particular case of circular cylindrical shells subjected to several types of thermal loadings.

Notes: Abstract Fish stomachs, 1149 for Tilapia zillii and 1698 for Oreochromis niloticus, were collected from April 1984 till April 1985 from a Nile canal in the Egyptian delta. Both species showed a significant overlap of diet (Schoener's index) among individuals ranging from 12 to 17.9 cm standard length. Outside this range differences in the importance of food of animal origin occurred. Macrophytes were the main food of O. niloticus and aquatic insects of the food of T. zillii. This initial diet overlap may have contributed to irregularity in the increase of full stomachs with increasing length, and to a decline of the stomach index (SI = stomach weight × 100/fish weight) with increase in length in O. niloticus. The stomach of either species correlated significantly with water temperature, but with daily photoperiod in O. niloticus only.

Notes: Butyl acrylate was graft copolymerized onto gelatin using ceric ammonium nitrate as redox initiator. A series of grafted products with various gelatin-to-butyl acrylate ratios were prepared. The molecular weight of the grafted side chains and the number of grafting sites were measured. The possible grafting sites on gelatin macromolecules were pointed out through amino acid analysis. The electron micrograph and DSC analysis showed that the grafted chain (PBA) and backbone gelatin were in separated phases. The graft copolymer was used in the receiving layer of the dye transfer blank film, and the photographic, dye transfer printing, and some physicomechanical properties were studied with satisfactory results.
