Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Since September 1984 we have been treating recipients (207 in this study) in the induction period after kidney transplantation with a combination of three immunosuppressives: low-dose ciclosporine (CyA), azathioprine (AZA) and methylprednisolone (MP). Compared to a control group from 1983 (n = 50) treated with high-dose CyA + MP (but without AZA), we saw a reduction in CyA nephrotoxicity, accompanied by good compatibility, no more complications, and no higher immunological risk concerning the graft. These results were demonstrated by good 1-year survival rates (according to the Cutler-Ederer formula) of patients (both groups: 97%) and grafts (1983: 85%; now: 87%), and by acceptable graft function (creatinine in serum 2.1 ±0.7 mg/dl).
