Notes: Methylene radical (CH2) in a rf methane discharge was detected using threshold ionization mass spectrometry. The absolute density of CH2 radical (∼109 cm−3) for the discharge in 10 mTorr CH4 with 10 W rf power was two orders of magnitude less than the density of methyl radical (CH3). The CH2 density in the afterglow of a pulsed rf discharge turned out to decay on a time scale (≤10 ms) much shorter than the decay time of CH3 radical (∼100 ms). The observed rapid loss of CH2 radical was attributed to a large sticking coefficient and the resultant surface loss, in addition to gas phase losses due to the CH2 reactions with CH3 and CH4.

Notes: Neutral CH3 radicals in a capacitively coupled rf discharge in methane have been detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer utilizing a threshold ionization technique. The absolute density of CH3 radicals was measured at pressures from 0.5 to 20 mTorr, together with the ionic composition of the methane plasma. The principal ionic species were CH+5 and C2H+5 , except in the low-pressure region, suggesting the importance of ion-molecule reactions in the plasma. The lifetime of CH3 radicals in the afterglow of pulsed rf discharges was measured and explained in terms of the recombination reaction CH3 +CH3 →C2 H6.

Notes: Abstract We tested the hypothesis that electrogenic ion pumps, working at the parenchyma symplast/xylem interface of pea hypocotyls, provide the driving force for K+ uptake from the xylem. Solutions of known composition were perfused through a hypocotyl segment. The K+ activity of the solution flowing out of the xylem (K+out) increased (i.e. K+ uptake decreased) when aerobic respiration was inhibited by lack of O2, and this was preceded by a decrease in Vpx (electrical potential difference between parenchyma symplast and xylem). Perfusion with auxin (1AA) and fusicoccin (FC) stimulated the electrogenic activity of the ‘xylem pumps’ (111 and 205% respectively) and stimulated uptake of K + from the xylem (with 71% and 29% respectively). The close correlation between xylem pump activity and K+ uptake corroborated the aforementioned hypothesis. Interestingly, inhibition of pump activity by anoxia was incomplete in the presence of FC. It is thought that FC increases the affinity of the ATP-requiring xylem pump for ATP, thus ensuring that ATP production during fermentation is sufficient to fuel the pump in the absence of O2.

Notes: Abstract We have devised an experimental system for simultaneous measurement of the activity of the xylem electrogenic ion pump, which is located on the inner cell membrane between the parenchyma symplast (p) and the xylem (x). and pH of the xylem exudate of a hypocotyl segment of Vigna unguiculata under pressurized xylem perfusion. Anoxia caused immediate depolarization of the inner cell membrane followed by alkalization of the xylem exudate several minutes later. Activity of the xylem pump was recovered by reaeration and acidification of the xylem exudate took place. These results indicate that the xylem pump is the respiration-dependent electrogenic proton-pump extruding proton from the parenchyma symplast into the xylem.

Notes: Abstract A waveguide reactor for infrared multiphoton dissociation reactions has been presented and applied to laser isotope separation of13C. The reactor is a sealed vessel containing a hollow waveguide for a CO2 laser, and the laser beam is condensed in the waveguide. The waveguide is a pipe of total-reflection glass or metal-coated glass with a funnelled inlet; it is 50 cm long with a 3 mm inner diameter. The isotope separation of13C has been made by multiphoton dissociation of CHF2Cl using a TEA CO2 laser. The result has shown that the waveguide reactor increases the dissociation yield by four to ten times as much as that without the waveguide at the pulse rate of up to 150 Hz, while the separation factor remains on the same level. It is also found that an optical breakdown which is induced at the wall surface plays a significant role to reduce the isotope selectivity.

Notes: A series of polyetherpolyol-4,4/-diphenylmethane diisocyanate based polyurethanes were prepared by reaction injection molding (RIM). The degree of phase separation and morphology, which govern the mechanical properties, was investigated by X-ray scattering, dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The phase reversion occurred at just a 70 weight percent concentration of the based reagent. The degree of phase separation increased with the molecular weight of polypropyleneglycol and decreased with the ethyleneoxide capping content. Morphology was influenced by injection rates.
