Notizen: Summary A case of esthesioneuroepithelioma was investigated ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically, using antibodies against neurofilament protein (NFP), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), keratin, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S-100 protein (S-100), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). The tumor initially manifested as an epidural mass in the anterior cranial fossa in a 64-year-old man, and about 31/2 years later, autopsy further revealed extensive metastases to the lymph nodes of the neck and thoracic cavity. In the cranial and nasal cavities, the tumor was composed of fairly uniform, ill-defined cells arranged in nests which were surrounded by a fibrovascular stroma. These histological features were reproduced in the metastatic tumor nodules with frequent occurrence of tubular arrangements of the tumor cells. Ultrastructurally, two different cell types were well recognized by their characteristic morphological features, which were reminiscent of sensory neurons and sustentacular cells of the olfactory epithelium. No dense-cored secretory granules were observed in the tumor cells. Immunohistochemically, the tumor showed a variable number of cells positive for NFP, keratin, NSE and S-100. NFP was present in a relatively small number of cells, which were found diffusely in the nests. Keratin was observed in the cells mainly located at the periphery. NSE-positive cells tended to form irregular clusters in the center. A few S-100-positive cells were found, without any particular arrangement. These findings indicated that the present tumor, which actually arose in the superior nasal cavity, consisted of cells differentiating in at least two distinct directions, neuronal and epithelial, and strongly suggested that the tumor was of true olfactory epithelium origin, or more precisely, derived from the bipotential, undifferentiated basal cells of this epithelium.

Notizen: Summary An unusual case of recurrent attacks of peculiar twilight state persisting for 41 years is the subject of this clinicopathological report. During the attacks the patient had depersonalization, showing a stiff face, and the electroencephalogram showed constant 5 Hz diffuse theta waves. The unique and characteristic neuropathological finding were many foamy spheroid bodies (FSB) in the substantia nigra which sometimes contained varying numbers of fine or coarse eosinophilic granules. Ultrastructurally, the FSB contained various small electron-dense granules and/or membranous structures quite different from so-called spheroids (axonal swellings). Bodian staining demonstrated that some FSB were situated within the bundles of the neuronal processes, suggesting that the FSB has originated from the degeneration of the axon and/or dendrites in the substantia nigra.

Notizen: Summary The cardiovascular responses to breath-holding (BH) during short-lasting supramaximal exercise (415 W) on a cycle ergometer were investigated in 15 healthy male subjects. The arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate (HR), endtidal PO2 and PCO2 were continuously monitored. Firstly, 15 subjects performed exercise during BH, preceded by air breathing (air-BH test), and secondly, exercise without BH. Then 9 of the subjects performed the same procedure as in the air-BH test, except that all subjects breathed 100% O2 for 1 min before apnoea (O2-BH test). In 2 of these subjects, the systemic arterial blood pressure was continuously measured via a catheter in the radial artery and plasma catecholamine concentration [CA] was also measured both during the air-BH and the O2-BH tests. In the later period of the air-BH test, the high HR level became progressively depressed. This response, however, was absent in the O2-BH test. There was a late increase in the arterial blood pressure in both tests, and both tests produced hypercapnia. Only the air-BH test resulted in hypoxia, substantial hypertension and HR-depression. The increase in plasma CA was similar in both tests. The marked HR-depression demonstrated here is ascribed mainly to activation of the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors by asphyxia, and partially to baroreceptor activity due to elevated blood pressure.

Notizen: Abstract The most adequate concentration of glucose in intraocular irrigating solution for the retina was studied electrophysiologically in the pigmented rabbit in vitro. Comparison of b-wave amplitudes demonstrated that glucose at a concentration of 20 m M/l yielded the highest values. A 40 mM/l glucose solution also increased the b-waves but to a lesser extent than did a solution of 20 mM/l. This result might be due to the detrimental effects of osmolarity. However, under hypoxic conditions the amplitudes of the b-wave obtained with 40 mM/l glucose solution was greater than those with 20 mM/l. It thus appears that slight hyperglycemic concentrations might have favorable effects on the ischemic retina.
