    Notes: It is demonstrated that in optical waveguides formed by ion implantation in LiNbO3, the lower modes for the extraordinary index exist in a buried region of enhanced index, and so may be unable to couple with a surface prism. This is because a shallow region of slightly reduced index near to the surface necessitates the tunnelling of power to these "missing modes.'' The number of such modes can be inferred from a comparison of data for two different wavelengths, and confirmation of this together with an estimation of their positions may be obtained by surface stripping. By taking them into account it has been possible to model the profile index by using a stepped base to the optical well.

    Notes: A holographic method similar to that previously used with LiNbO3 to study the spectral behavior of photorefractive centers has been applied to Bi12SiO20 (BSO) and Bi12GeO20 (BGO). By erasing with incoherent light a previously written grating, measurements of the grating decay constants as a function of the erasing wavelength have been carried out. The grating erasure exhibits decays made up of a sum of two exponential terms for all wavelengths between 390 and 620 nm. In terms of recent photorefractive models which use two active species, our results imply that there exist two different photorefractive centers in BGO and BSO. By numerically fitting the observed spectral dependencies of the decay constants to the model equations, the absorption bands associated to these centers have been obtained. Their peak positions and half-widths are the following: 2.7 eV (0.27 eV) and 3.1 eV (0.4 eV) for BSO; 2.8 eV (0.3 eV) and 3.1 eV (0.4 eV) for BGO.

    Notes: The quenching cross sections of Ne metastable levels by N2 and CO were measured to be (in A(ring)2 units): 8.3±0.4, 8.7±0.4 for 3s(3/2)2 level and 8.0±0.4, 9.1±0.4 for 3s(1/2)0 level, respectively, at 443 K. The metastables are produced by a pulsed electron beam and their population was monitored by fluorescence induced by a cw dye laser.

    Notes: In March of 1984 an immature Rhamida guatemalensis(Günther, 1864) lacking the right pectoral fin (Fig. 1) was captured in the Sangregado sector, Arenal Dam, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°28′ N, 84°46′W) The body colouration and morphometric characteristics were as described for this species (Bussing 1966; Zúñga, 1980). X-ray examination revealed the absence of the radial bones and the fin rays of the right peoctoral fin. External examination of the tegument of this region showed no scars or evidence of accidental loss of the appendage, indicating that the fin had never developed.Morphometric data from this abnormal specimen are: total length, 14.25 cm, standard length, 11.98cm; maximum height of body, 22.35 cm; maximum width of body, 2.40 cm, caudal peduncle width, 1.27 cm; head length, 3.00cm.
