Notes: Abstract Five samples of Poly (vinylidene fluoride) with a molecular weight from 45,000 to 260,000 were analyzed by means of FT-IR spectroscopy in order to study the influence of molecular weight $$\left( {\bar Mv} \right)$$ on the crystallization process. The spectra of films obtained from methylethylketone solutions revealed the prevalence of form II (α) in the case of lower $$\bar Mv$$ and of form III (γ) in the higher molecular weight samples. The amount of form III was found to increase as the Mv decreased and as annealing temperatures increased. The deconvolution technique of vibrational spectra allowed detection of small amounts of other forms accompanying the prevailing one.

Notes: Polyolefins functionalized with diethylmaleate were mixed with poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) in different compositions. Intermolecular interactions involving the carbonyl groups of the side chains of the functionalized polyolefins and methine hydrogens of PVC were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy. The major flexibility of the ester groups attached to the backbone chains, with respect to polyesters, seems to increase the capability of such groups to interact with groups of more polar polymers, thus allowing prediction of easier miscibility, which however also depends on the starting polyolefin structure and function-alization degree.

Notes: Infrared studies of the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/di-n-butylphthalate (DBP) system are reported. Spectra of DBP in different solvents seem to be indicative of the ability of DBP to interact with PVC chains in the same way as with polyesters and of competitive interactions between DBP molecules and DBP with PVC. Plots of the width at half-height of the carbonyl stretching vibration, measured at 25 and at -180°C, as a function of composition, show a sudden change of slope at about 60% PVC concentration by weight, indicating that above this polymer composition interaction between DBP and PVC dominates that between DBP molecules. This change corresponds to a “singularity” observed in the dependence of the glass transition temperature on composition.
