Notes: Abstract Five samples of Poly (vinylidene fluoride) with a molecular weight from 45,000 to 260,000 were analyzed by means of FT-IR spectroscopy in order to study the influence of molecular weight $$\left( {\bar Mv} \right)$$ on the crystallization process. The spectra of films obtained from methylethylketone solutions revealed the prevalence of form II (α) in the case of lower $$\bar Mv$$ and of form III (γ) in the higher molecular weight samples. The amount of form III was found to increase as the Mv decreased and as annealing temperatures increased. The deconvolution technique of vibrational spectra allowed detection of small amounts of other forms accompanying the prevailing one.

Notes: We have ascertained that aqueous solutions of formaldehyde absorb hydrogen sulfide proportionally to the formaldehyde present in solution. The highest molar ratio obtainable in solution is equivalent to the value CH2O/H2S = 2. When this ratio is reached, regardless of the initial concentration of formaldehyde, if the solutions are maintained constantly under pressure of hydrogen sulfide, separation of a solid product begins. Various chemical and physical studies indicate that the first solid separated from this system is HSCH2SCH2SCH2OCH2OH. A possible mechanism of formation of this compound from the liquid phase is discussed.

Notes: A method of compositive characterization of Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) adhesives has been developed by combining NMR spectroscopy and chemical analysis. Urea-formaldehyde standard derivatives were prepared to interpret the NMR spectra of UF condensates. The synthesized standard derivatives are: monomethylol urea, dimethylol urea, monomethylolurea-methylether, dimethylolurea-dimethylether, methylene-diurea, dimethylol-oxymethylene-diurea.The UF condensates were examined in dimethylsulfoxide d6/CaCl2 solution without any chemical pretreatments. By this method it is possible to determine the content of free methylol, methylene, and oxymethylene formaldehyde and of nonsubstituted, monosubstituted, and bisubstituted amide groups.
