Notes: The propagation of long surface water waves over an undulating bed is governed by a Mathieu equation. Instabilities of solutions of this equation indicate resonant interactions associated with the strong reflection of the surface waves by the bedforms. The strongest interaction occurs when the bed wavenumber (l) is approximately twice the surface wavenumber (k). This interaction is known in solid-state physics as Bragg reflection. In this paper the interaction of incident surface waves with a patch of ripples on an otherwise flat bed is considered. For the general nonresonant case (l≠2k), a perturbation solution of the Mathieu equation is obtained. This solution indicates that the reflection coefficient R, defined as the ratio of the magnitudes of the reflected and incident waves, is both oscillatory in the ratio of the overall length of the ripple patch to the surface wavelength and also resonant in the vicinity of l=2k. The condition of exact resonance (l=2k) is studied separately and the solution obtained predicts that R tends uniformly to unity as the number of ripples (having l=2k) is increased. The present approach is simpler and more readily applicable than the use of previous more complicated methods based on potential theory. It also provides some insight into the higher-order resonant interactions between waves on a free surface and an undulating bed. The results are particularly important in oceanography, in connection with the reflection of incident surface waves by sandbars off beaches.

Notes: Summary The weights of 220 infants of Bangladeshi origin attending two clinics in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets were analysed at birth, 6 months and 18 months of age. The weights were compared first with the Tanner-Whitehouse standards derived from English children and then with Indian data from the infants of well-to-do families. The mean weights of the infants of Bangladeshi origin were below the British Tanner-Whitehouse 50th centiles, approximating to the 25th centile values. As the means were similar to those reported from well-nourished Indian infants, it is unlikely that the Bangladeshi infants were undernourished. The reported weights of well-nourished Indian infants appeared to be a more appropriate reference for the infants of Bangladeshi origin than the Tanner-Whitehouse values. However the Tanner-Whitehouse charts can be used, but with their 25th, 10th and 3rd centile lines being taken to read 50th, 25th and 10th centiles, respectively. Significantly more boy than girl infants were brought to one of the clinics.

Notes: The fermionic and supersymmetric octonionic bimodular representations are constructed. It is shown that an octonionic formulation of the fermion leads to an intrinsically ten-dimensional world with two independent representations. Consistency conditions for an octonionic supersymmetric algebra are also discussed.

Notes: It is well known that the Cauchy integral formula may be used in the study of integral transforms, leading to an elegant formulation in 2-D. We show that the quaternionic analysis of Fueter, and in particular the quaternionic analogue of the Cauchy formula, may be applied to derive integral transforms of vector functions in 3-D in an elegant manner. In particular we show that this result contains as special cases results of interest in the study of integral transforms in geophysics.

Notes: Two field experiments were carried out to determine critical conditions at the threshold of sand motion beneath irregular sea waves. The experiments were performed outside the breaker zone at Blackpool Sands, Start Bay, Devon, in waters of depth 4–10 m. From synchronous video and near-bed velocity records, critical conditions at the threshold of motion have been established in terms of the measured free-stream velocity amplitude. Despite the irregular nature of the (swell) waves and the mixture of grain sizes on the bed, agreement between the present field results and previous laboratory results is reasonable, provided that proper allowance is made for the presence of sand ripples. In order to define threshold motion conditions on a more rational basis than in terms of the free-stream velocity amplitude, calculations of the bottom stress have been made on the basis of laboratory-derived wave drag coefficients. The threshold-motion conditions thus established from the field data are in good agreement with sediment threshold values from Shields' curve derived from laboratory work, at least for cases in which it has been possible to calculate the skin-friction contribution to the total bed shear stress.

Notes: Abstract In this second study of the myxozoan Zschokkella russelli Tripathi from Wales, infection occurred in 71-0% of five-bearded rocklings, Ciliata mustela L.; all infected fish were mature and immature fish were uninfected. Histologieal studies showed ehanges to gallbladder and liver that mostly conformed with earher findings, but sinusoidal dilation, which had not been seen previously, was present in three of 22 infected livers. Thickening around hepatic ducts was shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to comprise fibroblasts and associated collagen bundles, while the attenuated epithelium of hepatic ducts bore few mierovilli. Zschokkella russelli plasmodia were seen by TEM to have fine tubular structures, particularly adjacent to developing sporonts. Spores showed long extensions to the sporoplasm, while spore valves had up to 18 surface ridges each and depressions between ridges were supported by microtubules. Otherwise, in its general ultrastructure and sporogenesis Z. russelli resembled other myxosporida.
