    Notes: At the time of clinical presentation with ovarian carcinoma, 85% of women have an elevated serum level of the CA125 antigen, but the duration of the preclinical phase of expression of CA125 is unknown. From the database of The Royal London Hospital ovarian cancer screening project, 19 women were identified who had a serum CA125 level 〈30 IU ml−1, measured between 2 and 24 months prior to their clinical diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Histological sections of tumor removed from these women were reviewed. In 17 cases tumor tissue was immunocytochemically stained for CA125 expression. Tumor blocks of 40 women presenting clinically with ovarian cancer with known preoperative CA125 levels were also stained for CA125 expression. The serum CA125 level at the time of diagnosis was available in six of the 19 screening study cases, four of which had levels〉 30 IU ml−1. In five of the 13 cases with unknown serum CA125 levels, ovarian tumor tissue expressed CA125. Among the 40 controls, 24 tumors expressed CA125 and all 24 had a serum level greater than 47 IU ml−1. An annual screening test using serum levels of CA125 at a cut-off of 30 IU ml−1, cannot detect all cases of ovarian cancer that express the antigen at the time of clinical diagnosis. The development of a panel of complementary tumor markers will be necessary to provide a test with a higher sensitivity for the detection of preclinical ovarian cancer.

    Notes: Fallopian tube carcinoma can be histologically indistinguishable from and has a similar clinical behavior to epithelial ovarian carcinoma. However, it is considerably less common; only approximately 1000 cases have been recorded in the literature. In the prevalence screen of 22000 women participating in The Royal London Hospital, London, UK, ovarian cancer screening project, three cases of early stage primary fallopian tube carcinoma were diagnosed following the finding of an elevated serum level of the CA 125 antigen. The ratio of epithelial ovarian : tubal cancer developing in these postmenopausal volunteers was 6:1. This is 25-fold greater than the expected ratio. It is difficult to attribute this finding to population selection bias. However, it is possible that the screening test was particularly effective in detecting tubal carcinoma or that, in clinical practice, the true primary site of origin of some tumors classified as widely disseminated ovarian cancer is in the fallopian tube.

    Notes: The use of manipulative experiments to study directly the effects of climate change on natural and managed systems is expensive if performed on a large scale: it also relies upon accurate predictions of future climatic conditions. Predictive modelling is less expensive and permits a range of scenarios to be considered but this is only as reliable as the underpinning model.Predicting the suitability of England and Wales for the cultivation of forage maize under climate change was attempted using an established crop growth model by Muchow et al. (1990) integrated with climate data. The biological and climatic inputs to the model were the thermal requirements for the stages of crop growth, leaf number, leaf area, harvest index, the daily maximum and minimum air temperature, precipitation and solar radiation. These values were obtained from a daily meteorological database for ninety-three sites in England and Wales for the period 1951–80. Model outputs as point values of potential crop yield predicting current production -‘baseline’- were statistically validated using actual crop yield data collated from bibliographic analysis. The baseline results indicated that pans of the south-east appeared to be too dry and the north too cold. The model was run again using an artificial sensitivity test (temperature +2°C. precipitation ±10%). Increased precipitation led to a predicted increase in geographical suitability of the UK for forage maize production to the north and west. Under reduced precipitation there was a decrease in suitability in the south-east, possibly owing to moisture stress.

    Notes: The magnitude and the direction of the oscillatory exchange coupling in multilayer structures depend sensitively on the atomic scale ordering of the layers. Disorder in the form of substrate roughness, interlayer thickness fluctuations, or interfacial interdiffusion can result in reduced bilinear exchange coupling, the disappearance of short period coupling oscillations, and the increase or decrease of the relative strength of the biquadratic coupling. We have investigated the effect of roughness by growing nearly perfect multilayer Fe/Cr and Fe/Au structures on single crystal Fe whisker substrates. The disorder in these structures was measured using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), while the coupling directions and magnitudes were measured using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis and magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. For the nearly perfect trilayer structures, the periodicity and the magnitude of the oscillatory coupling are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on spacer layer Fermi surface properties. For rougher multilayer systems the exchange coupling can be modeled using structural information from STM and RHEED measurements.
