    Notes: Summary The anti-tumour properties of Cy 233, a new nitrosoureido sugar, were investigated in two murine solid tumours: B16 melanoma and subcutaneously implanted colon adenocarcinoma. Injected i.v., Cy 233 exerted a strong anti-tumour effect against the established B16 melanoma: long-term survivors were recorded with all schedules of treatment. The drug was even more effective against advanced colon 38 adenocarcinoma: it produced a high percentage of total tumour regression, regardless of the route of administration (i.p., i.v., p.o.). The marked in vivo activity of Cy 233 against advanced colon 38 adenocarcinoma, which is known to be resistant to such major anti-cancer drugs as BCNU and chlorozotocin, its water solubility and its stability in aqueous media are further elements warranting toxicological and clinical studies of this agent.

    Notes: Abstract The RC tumor, originally a renal adenocarcinoma very sensitive to different classes of chemotherapeutic agents, maintained in CDF 1 mice, was examined for its ability to metastasize. When inoculated into the foot (with 107 tumor cells), bulky metastases developed in the popliteal and para-aortic lymph nodes, in a constant and reproducible pattern, producing a massive microscopic invasion of the liver, the lungs and the spleen. The antigenicity tests demonstrated a low immunogenicity of the tumor. Chemotherapy assays showed that adriamycin and vincristine were effective against metastatic dissemination when administered early after tumor cell inoculation and principally when combined with excision of the tumor-bearing leg. The RC model appears to be suitable for the study of lymph node metastasis and could be used in chemotherapy trials of new drugs potentially effective against metastases of the lymphatic system.

    Notes: Abstract Ten, six, and twenty-one new lines appearing in the beam-foil spectra of boron (30–200 nm) have been identified in B II, B III, and B IV, respectively. Energies have been determined with higher accuracy than obtained before for the 2p3s 1 P 0, 2s6d 3 D, 2p3p 3 D, 2p3p 3 S, 2p3p 3 P, and 2p3p 1 D terms in B II. First energy values are also reported for the 2s6d 1 D and 2s7d 3 D terms in B II.

    Notes: Abstract RatiosN 2s /N 3p of 2s to 3p populations in hydrogen atoms formed by the passage of protons through carbon foils have been measured using the beam-foil-laser excitation method reported very recently. No dependence ofN 2s /N 3p on the incident proton energyE p , in the 100–300 keV energy range analysed, is observed. From the ratioN 3p /N 2p of 3p to 2p beam-foil populations in hydrogen reported previously (N 3p /N 2p independent ofE p forE p 〉100 keV) and the ratiosN 2s /N 3p measured in the present work, a mean value ofN 2s /N 2p equal to 0.61±0.04 is deduced. These results are compared with available experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract Doubly excited4 L and2 L systems of BIII have been studied by beam-foil spectroscopy. Spectra of boron (λ: 28.7–50.1 nm) have been recorded at Bochum with a resolution superior to that obtained previously. Eight new lines are classified in the4 L system and one in the2 L system. The wavelength accuracy of most of the transitions already reported in the core-excited systems of BIII is greatly improved. On the basis of these results, six and two unidentified lines appearing in spectra recorded at Liège (λ: 50–200 nm) are classified in the4 L and2 L core-excited systems, respectively. Where comparison with theoretical predictions by Chung et al. [1] is possible, excellent agreement is found for all the assigned lines. The first energy values are reported for seven terms in the doubly excited quartet system. Moreover, seven new lines are identified in the singly excited system of BIII.

    Notes: Metabolism of cyclosporin A (CsA) was studied in a model of isolated and perfused rabbit liver, and in man. After diethyl ether extraction, CsA metabolites were separated and successfully purified by a combination of two highperformance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedures. A normal-phase HPLC methodology was used to separate most of the metabolites, and further separation and purification were optimized with a reversed-phase HPLC method. 27 different CsA metabolites were separated, collected, and characterized by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. In addition to several metabolites already described (OL-1, OL-17, OL-18 and OL-21), new compounds (of original molecular weights 1236, 1222 and 1174, and numerous structural isomers of previously reported molecular weights) were isolated from rabbit and human bile. Mass spectral analysis of two of these new metabolites strongly suggests vicinal dihydrodiol (mol. wt 1236) and N-demethylated vicinal dihydrodiol (mol. wt 1222) structures. These two new metabolites most probably derive from an epoxide as a preliminary intermediate.
