    Notes: CHO+ ions are made by electron impact on CD3OH in the source (ICR1) of a tandem ion cyclotron resonance spectrometer. These ions are injected into a differentially pumped analysis cell (ICR2) where they are reacted with a number of small molecules. The internal energy distribution in the CHO+ ions is obtained using total reactivity studies with neutral molecules of varying proton affinities. About 40% of the CHO+ ions react with D2 either by proton transfer to form D2H+ or isotopic exchange to form CDO+ ions. A series of experiments are performed that conclusively show these ions are the HOC+ isomer and the exchange is due to the catalytic isomerization reaction HOC++D2→DCO++HD which is approximately 37 kcal/mol exothermic. The product DCO+ ions are vibrationally cool indicating the reaction releases most of its energy as kinetic energy. Absolute rate constants for reactions of CHO+ ions with the neutrals 13CO, 15N2, CO2, O2, D2, and Ar are reported. HOC+ reacts with D2 at about 30% of the collision rate. This rate decreases with increasing HOC+ kinetic energy in the range 0.025 to 0.44 eV. The two products of the reaction are D2H+/CO and DCO+/HD with DCO+/HD comprising ∼42% of the products for the HOC+ ions formed from CD3OH. Phase space theory calculations are performed to determine the barrier to catalytic isomerization. The data are best fit with a barrier between 0.0 and −0.05 eV relative to the HOC+/D2 asymptotic energy. A barrier of this magnitude yields reaction rate constants at interstellar temperatures of at least 10% of the collision rate constant (i.e., k〉1×10−10 cm3/s), and could explain why so little HOC+ is observed in interstellar clouds.

    Notes: The relationship of health beliefs, health locus of control, and the frequency of practice of breast self-examination in women was explored through use of a survey. Health beliefs alone and health beliefs combined with internal health locus of control were found to predict the frequency of practice of breast self-examination in a sample of 48 women. The combined variables of health beliefs, internal health locus of control, religion, and occupation explained 80% of the variance in nonpractice and 73.3% of the variance for high practice. Moderate frequency practice was not a significant predictor of breast self-examination. Discriminant function analysis, canonical correlation, and analysis of variance were used in the data analysis.

    Notes: Abstract Monoclonal antibody II52F10 was elicited against purified synaptonemal complexes (SCs); it recognizes two major components of the lateral elements of SCs, namely an Mr=30 000 and an Mr=33000 protein. We studied the distribution of the antigens of II52F10 within tissues and cells of the male rat by immunoblot analysis and immuno-cytochemical techniques. Nuclear proteins from various cell types, including spermatogonia and spermatids, did not react with antibody II52F10 on immunoblots; the same holds for proteins from isolated mitotic chromosomes. As expected, an Mr=30 000 and an Mr=33 000 protein from spermatocyte nuclei did react with the antibody. In cryostat sections of liver, brain, muscle and gut we could not detect any reaction with II52F10. In the testis the reaction was confined to SCs or SC fragments. Partly on the basis of indirect evidence we identified the antigen-containing cells as zygotene up to and including post-diffuse diplotene spermatocytes. The persistence of some antigen-containing fragments in the earliest stages of spermatids could not be excluded. We conclude that the lateral elements (LEs) of SCs are not assembled by rearrangement of pre-existing components of the nucleus: at least two of their major components are newly synthesized, presumably during zygotene. Furthermore we conclude partly from indirect evidence that the major components of the LEs of SCs are not involved in the chromosome condensation processes that take place during the earliest stages of meiotic prophase.

    Notes: Abstract Three patients with chronic hepatitis B infection, two with chronic active hepatitis and cirrhosis, and the third with quiescent cirrhosis, cleared HBsAg from their serum and eventually developed anti-HBs. All three were asymptomatic and had nearly normal serum aminotransferases following loss of HBsAg. Liver biopsy revealed cirrhosis in each patient. With the development of anti-HBs, these patients became serologically indistinguishable from patients with a cryptogenic cirrhosis who had prior unrelated exposure to hepatitis B. Remote chronic hepatitis B infection may be a more common cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis than is commonly appreciated.

    Notes: Abstract Three patients are described with chronic hepatitis B virus infection for three to six years before hepatitis delta virus superinfection occurred. Liver biopsy performed in two patients prior to their delta illness revealed chronic persistent hepatitis and chronic active hepatitis, respectively. Within one to seven months of the acute delta event, all three patients lost their circulating hepatitis B surface antigen. Subsequently, delta antibody also cleared. Clinical well-being and normal transaminases were documented over 10–44 months of follow-up. Although most cases of delta infection in chronic hepatitis B result in severe or progressive disease, a small number of patients may develop clearance of the HBsAg with clearance of both B and delta infections.

    Notes: With the aid of the elliptic continuation method, transonic aerofoils for two different purposes have been optimized. The design process is described and it is shown that the optimization is more difficult for higher design Mach numbers. The results of experimental investigations confirmed the good aerodynamic performances of the designed aerofoils, although no real shock-free pressure distributions could be achieved in the experiments and the highest aerodynamic efficiencies occurred always at higher lift coefficients, with pressure distributions already having shock waves.

    Notes: Various diazonium, multiply charged ammonium and pyridinium salts and one diphosphonium salt have been analysed by thermospray (TSP) mass spectrometry. The intact cation forms the base peak in all spectra. Typically only a few, yet structurally significant, ions are observed. For diazonium salts the level of fragmentation can be controlled by the temperature of the TSP interface while the fragmentation of the quaternary salts is found to be rather insensitive to interface temperatures.
