Notes: Summary The effect on 24-h gastric juice volume and pH of 30 min intravenous infusions of 200 and 400 mg oxmetidine and 50 mg ranitidine, administered at 6-hourly intervals, has been investigated in 12 healthy male subjects. After each infusion period a median intragastric pH 〉5 was obtained with all active treatments, which also caused a significantly elevated 24-h median pH versus placebo. The 24-h median pH following ranitidine did not differ significantly from that after either oxmetidine treatment. There was a sharp decrease in gastric volume secretion within 2 h of infusion of each active treatment. There was no significant difference between active treatments in the time required to reach an intragastric pH 〉5. No active treatment was able to maintain the pH 〉5 for longer than 4 h (average 3 h). It is concluded that in patients at risk of stress ulcer, continuous infusion therapy with H2-blockers should be employed both for pharmacokinetic and practical reasons. It should be accompanied by regular measurement of pH in order to monitor any fall in pH. Alternatively, shorter time intervals than 6 h should be used for bolus therapy.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Im Zeitraum 1981 bis 1986 wurden bei 18 Neugeborenen auf den neonatalen ITS der beiden Dresdener KinderklinikenListeria monocytogenes aus Blutkulturen, Liquores, Mekonium-/Stuhlproben bzw.
Notes: Summary Between 1981 and 1986Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from blood cultures, CSF, meconium/stools or external swabs from 18 newborn infants of two neonatal intensive care units (ICU) in adjacent pediatric clinics of Dresden. The epidemiological and clinical data of infants and their mothers, as well as microbiological and laboratory, x-ray, EEG and ultrasonic findings, are presented. All infants had an early onset of their disease. Cases were classified as granulomatosis infantiseptica (three cases), sepsis (three cases), meningitis (eight cases) and listerial infection without distinct organ manifestations (four cases), respectively. As far as the predominant symptoms at admission were concerned, no typical clinical signs of neonatal listeriosis could be evaluated. Cases with manifest clinical infections had an overall mortality rate of 21% (3/14) despite the immediate initiation of antibiotic therapy; at discharge, a further five patients showed neurological residuals. Serotyping and phagetyping have proved to be methods for recognition or exclusion of epidemiological relationships.

Notes: With the aid of the elliptic continuation method, transonic aerofoils for two different purposes have been optimized. The design process is described and it is shown that the optimization is more difficult for higher design Mach numbers. The results of experimental investigations confirmed the good aerodynamic performances of the designed aerofoils, although no real shock-free pressure distributions could be achieved in the experiments and the highest aerodynamic efficiencies occurred always at higher lift coefficients, with pressure distributions already having shock waves.
