    Notes: Abstract Superradiant transitions were observed between high lying levels in Sr. The transitions react very sensitively to an external electric field. Superradiant cascades or one transition in a superradiant branching can be suppressed. The square root of the high of a superradiant pulse decreases with the second power of the electric field strength. This behaviour can be explained by calculations.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 72 Patienten mit ÖV wurde endoskopisch der intravasale ÖVDruck bestimmt, bei 31 von ihnen zusätzlich auch der Pfortaderdruck. Nur im Bereich des oesophagokardialen Übergangs stimmen Pfortaderdruck und ÖV-Druck überein. Je größer die ÖV sind, desto höher ist der intravasale ÖV-Druck. Ebenfalls steigt die Blutungsgefahr mit der Größe der ÖV. Eine prophylaktische Sklerosierung sollte bei zweit- und drittgradigen ÖV erfolgen.
    Notes: Summary In 72 patients with oesophageal varices the intravascular oesophageal variceal pressure was measured, in 31 of them the portal pressure as well. The portal pressure was identical with the variceal pressure only at the cardia. There was a positive relationship between the size of varices and the variceal pressure and between the size of varices and the occurrence of bleeding from varices. Prophylactic endoscopic sclerotherapy is indicated in grade II and III varices.

    Notes: Abstract High-resolution laser atomic beam spectroscopy has been applied to studyJ and term dependences in the isotope shift of the levels 4f 75d6s a 10 D J ,a 8 D J of Eu I. A parametric analysis of the isotope shift has been performed. TheJ dependence is interpreted through two term-dependent parametersz 5d , and the term dependence through one parameterΔT:z 5d (a 10 D)=44.1 (2.6) MHz,z 5d (a 8 D)=55.9 (2.3) MHz,ΔT=408.5 (3.2) MHz. Ab initio Hartree-Fock and Dirac-Fock calculations have been made to interpret these parameters. Within the accuracy of the calculations the parameters can be attributed to field shift effects.

    Notes: Abstract The tensor polarizabilities of the 4snd 1 D 2 Ca Rydberg states fromn=5 ton=19 have been measured using quantum beat spectroscopy at very low electric field strengths. The irregular behaviour of the polarizabilities is well reproduced by Coulomb approximation calculations. Using a quantum defect analysis, the strong variations of the tensor polarizabilities of themsnd 1 D 2 states of the alkaline earth atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba can be explained.

    Notes: Abstract The occurrence of ΔF=±2, ±3, and ±4 transitions in the hyperfine structure of the Eu I lineλ 629.1 nm (4f 76s 2 a 8 S 7/2−4f 76s6p z 8 P 5/2) was investigated with the application of high-resolution laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy. It was possible to show that the appearance of such transitions depends on the magnitude of an external magnetic field. Calculations of the hyperfine Zeeman splittings of the excited and the ground state were performed. This allowed the identification of the forbidden transitions.

    Notes: Abstract The isotope shift in the arc spectrum of hafnium was studied in 10 lines for the isotopes176Hf,178Hf, and180Hf by means of a photoelectric recording Fabry-Perot spectrometer with digital data processing. The observed shifts together with results from an earlier study were analyzed by means of the parametric method. The field shift difference between the terms 5d 3(4 F) 6s 5 F and3 F resulted in 17(2) mK for the isotope pair178,180Hf. This reflects the influence of a second-order effect which is described by the parameterg 2=−4.4(6) mK. The parameterz 5d , displaying the magnitude of spin-dependent effects in the isotope shift of 5d 36s, was found to be 0.8(2) mK for the same isotope pair. The experimental data are compared with results obtained from the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock method. The calculated electron densities describe the experimental field shifts with good accuracy. Hartree-Fock screening ratios for various types of transitions were used to evaluate changes in mean-square nuclear charge radii. The mean value ofλ 178,180≈δ〈r 2〉178,180 equals 0.069(10) fm2.

    Notes: Abstract The quadratic Stark effect in the hyperfine structure of all levels of the configuration 4f 7(8 S)6s6p in europium I, which can be excited by electric dipole radiation from the ground state, has been investigated by laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy. From the measured shifts and splittings of the hyperfine components the scalar and tensor polarizabilities have been deduced. From the polarizabilities radial integrals for electric dipole radiation were determined by a parametric analysis. With these radial integrals theoretical values of the polarizabilities were calculated.

    Notes: Abstract Radiative lifetimes of the 4f 7 (8 S) 6s 6p z 10 P 7/2, 9/2,z 8 P 5/2, 7/2, 9/2 andz 6 P 7/2, 5/2 levels of Eu I were measured by the time resolved recording of the exponential decay of the fluorescence. Three of them were measured for the first time, the others agree with previous determinations. From the values of the lifetimes absolute oscillator strengths are deduced, taking into account the branching ratios for the transitions to the 4f 7 6s 2 and 4f 7 5d 6s levels. From these absolutef values the radial integralI(6s 2, 6s 6p) was derived by a parametric analysis. Theoretical values of oscillator strengths which were calculated using this radial integral show good agreement with the experimental data.
