Notes: Abstract New methods for the detection of ECG and EOG artefacts in the EEG are introduced, which can also be used for the evaluation of the quality of the elimination procedure. These algorithms are based on the estimation of the power or coherence spectrum by means of FFT. The advantage of this method is that the EEG spectrum is monitored by the test algorithm. The spectrum will be plotted if no influence of the ECG and EOG can be found. On the other hand, if artefacts are detected the correction of the EEG time series will be carried out and the spectrum of the corrected EEG time series will be plotted after repeated monitoring by the test algorithm.

Notes: Abstract It can be shown that the sequence of spontaneous movements in the active sleep of healthy neonates can be described as a Poisson process. This statistical model is the basis of the modelling of movement-related heart-rate reactions (MRHR) as a secondary process. Modelling these processes gives essential information about possible diagnostic parameters such as the mean frequency of classified movements in active sleep (AS), and characteristics of the course of MRHR. Optimisation of the reliability of interpreting power spectral parameters, analysis of longterm rhythms and designation of the physiological trends of neonatal heart rates can be attained if the results of time series analysis are compared with fitted simulations. Modifications and new techniques of data acquisition and processing are created by means of the computer model.

Notes: Abstract A large interindividual variability of parameters quantifying respiratory sinus arrhythmia were found in a well defined group of healthy neonates during constant conditions of examination. Reasons for this can be found by means of a mathematical model which is based on physiological data. The results indicate sharp inconsistencies in the transfer function between respiratory movements and resulting respiratory sinus arrhythmia and are dependent on a relative frequency unit fN (ratio of mean respiration rate to mean heart rate). The values of the coherence (as a function of this relative frequency unit) between respiratory movements and heart rate are also distinguished by a systematic decrease from lower to higher fN values (fN=0·1–0·5) and inconsistencies in modelling as well as in physiological examinations. The reasons for both effects can be demonstrated. The study is the basis of a new qualitative step of quantification of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in neonates by power spectral and coherence analyses.

Description / Table of Contents: Water cooling of hollow steel sections in buildings in case of fireSupporting hollow steel sections in building constructions can be water cooled. In case of fire, the water cooling must guarantee the supporting function of the steel sections for a definite period of time. Possible corrosion reactions are discussed for the normal service as well as for the case of fire. The parameters of interest are outlined and explained in detail with respect to testing. Cases of application are presented, and the corrosion resistance of the systems is described.
