Notes: A high-temperature microwave spectrometer has been constructed for the study of hot corrosive gases. The absorption cell consists of a 213-cm X-band copper waveguide which is heated along roughly 130 cm of its length. A thin nickel strip held taut by stainless-steel posts at either end of the waveguide serves as the Stark septum. The sample chamber is coupled to the Stark cell midway along its length by a slip joint formed from two concentric tubes. This design ensures a long effective absorption path length and minimizes sample consumption. The hot cell is used in conjunction with an HP 8400C microwave spectrometer source which has been interfaced to a small computer for data acquisition, storage, and retrieval. The successful operation of the spectrometer has been demonstrated with KOH vapor at 580 °C. The J=2←1 transitions of a number of vibrational states of monomeric KOH have been observed in the region of 32.8 GHz. The observed signal-to-noise ratio of these transitions indicates that the sensitivity compares favorably to spectrometers which have been used to observe higher J transitions in the submillimeter region. Radio-frequency–microwave double resonance techniques have been demonstrated for the first time in a high-temperature Stark cell by observing the J=2←1 l-doublet transitions in the (011O) state of KOH.

Notes: A high temperature Stark and radiofrequency-microwave double resonance spectrometer was used to observe the nuclear quadrupole structure of the J=2←1 transition of 39KOH in a number of vibrational states. First order analysis of the hyperfine components gave nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of eQq=−7.23 (29) MHz for the (0000) state, eQq=−7.16 (33) MHz for the (1000) state, and eQq=−7.29 (37) MHz for the (0110) state.

Notes: Kimura's disease, eosinophilic granuloma of soft tissues, is a chronic inflammatory condition and appears as subcutaneous tumor-like nodules in the head and neck regions. Histopathologically, it is characterized by the presence of lymphoid follicles, marked infiltration of eosinophils, fibrosis and vascular proliferation. This disease occurring in the orofacial region is relatively rare, only 14 cases having been previously reported. We describe 3 additional cases of Kimura's disease and discuss these in relation to angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia.

Notes: We report a case with rapidly growing subcutaneous and intra-muscular tumours that were identical histopathologically to a pre-existing left atrial myxoma. No invasion of visceral organs or skeleton was found. This is a very rare case of metastasizing myxoma with wide dissemination and rapid metastastic growth, despite the benign appearance of the original tumour.

Notes: A 70-year-old male and a 46-year-old female, both living in Japan, were seen because of multiple erythematous papules and plaques on the trunk and extremities. The peripheral white blood cell counts were increased to 30000–80000/mm3. The majority of white cells had characteristic lobulated and deeply indented nuclei. The patients and most of their family members had anti-ATLV antibody. Using an OKT series of monoclonal antibodies the tumour cells were found to be T-cells. Trisomy 21 was detected in the first case and ATL virus proviral DNA in the second.

Notes: Abstract Transport properties of molten salts are encountered in a broad range of R&D tasks, particularly in areas of high-temperature thermal energy storage and in advanced battery concepts. This communication examines a semiempirical corresponding-states correlation as a predictive method using molten salts viscosities. Predictive calculations with molten NaCl and KNO3 as model systems, and with calibration quality data sets as the reference base, are used to evaluate this method. While the proper slope for the temperature dependence is “forecast,” the quality of the predicted data depend directly on the accuracy level of the one experimental value that is the seed for the calculations. Some results are described to show how such calculatins have proved useful in guiding value judgments in studies of the viscosity data in the open scientific literature.
