Notes: Summary 70 chronic alcoholics in the withdrawal state, 45 with convulsions and 25 controls without convulsive seizures, were tested with respect to electrolyte changes and acid base balance in serum or blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It was of special interest to note that there was a partial independence between magnesium levels in serum and CSF. Thus the serum level has only a limited liability as to magnesium depletion suggested to be responsible for seizure precipitation. In the seizure group a slightly but significantly lower magnesium, potassium and calcium in CSF and a significant decrease of potassium and calcium in serum were revealed. In the nonzeizure controls a similar decrease of magnesium in serum and potassium in CSF was observed while serum potassium and calcium in CSF and serum remained in low normal range. In both groups there was a prominent respiratory alkalosis. The role of magnesium depression for seizure precipitation is discussed with respect to the concomitant changes of other electrolytes and acid base disturbances.

Notes: Summary Computed tomography was carried out in two groups of chronic alcoholics diagnosed according to the research diagnostic criteria, one with and the other without epileptic seizures. The sizes of the ventricles and the extracerebral spaces were compared with those of a control group, in order to examine the possible role of cerebral atrophy in precipitating epileptic fits in chronic alcoholics. Although a severe degree of atrophy was demonstrated in both groups, no difference was found between alcoholics with and without seizures. However, by correlating the sizes of different spaces, a more generalized atrophy was found in alcoholics with seizures. Thus, cerebral atrophy in a more generalized form may play a yet undefined role in precipitating epileptic attacks.

Notes: The rates of proton transfer from 2, 4-hexadiene, 1, 3-cycloheptadiene, cyclopentadiene and acetone to t-butoxide have been measured in the gas phase using pulsed-ion-cyclotron-resonance spectroscopy. The rate constants are (units of 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1): 2.7 ± 0.4, 3.8 ± 0.4, 6.1 ± 0.7 and 10.8 ± 1.5, respectively. These results are analyzed in terms of the properties of the encounter complex and reaction transition states. The reaction profile for t-butoxide + cyclopentadiene is modeled using RRKM theory and an estimate for the central barrier height is obtained.

Notes: Irradiation of (RS,SR)-3-Phenyl-6-hepten-2-ol (3n) gave the photoproducts 6n-10n. Some reactions of 6n and 8n are reported. The regio- and diastereoselectivity observed in the photoreaction of substituted 5-phenylpentenes is discussed with respect to conformational preferences of the compounds to be irradiated.

Notes: Preparation of Styryl and Distyryl Derivatives of Pyridine2,4-, 2,5- and 2,6-Dimethylpyridines react with anils of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of dimethylformamide and potassium hydroxide to yield the corresponding distyrylpyridines (‘anil synthesis’). Under the same reaction conditions (4-methylstyryl)pyridines are converted to (stilbenylvinyl)pyridines. Similarly, the Schiff's base derived from pyridine-3-carbaldehyde and p-chloroaniline on treatment with methyl- and p-tolyl-substituted aromatic heterocycles gives the corresponding (heteroaryl-styryl)pyridines, whereas with the Schiff's bases derived from pyridine-2- and -4-carbaldehyde side reactions, such as dimerization followed by disproportionation predominate.

Notes: Flexible model results for the —NH2 inversion in vinylamine are compared with microwave data published by Lovas et al. [3]. The information available on the spacing of inversion levels is found to be sufficient to rule out a planar equilibrium structure. Shifts of rotational constants upon excitation of the inversion are calculated for two predicted paths of motion derived from PRDDO geometry optimization results obtained by MiiIler & Brown [2]. Partial geometry optimization yields a path inconsistent with experiment but the path obtained from complete optimization produces shifts in excellent agreement with the observed shifts. A potential energy function compatible with experimental data on spacing of inversion levels is calculated from the observed inertia defects. The inversion angle at equilibrium is slightly smaller than the angle predicted from PRDDO calculations, and the barrier to inversion, ΔV = 1.08 ± 0.07 kcal/mol, is approximately half the PRDDO value.
