    Notizen: 1. The ability of verapamil to induce a contractile response in skeletal muscle was investigated using the canine isolated, blood-perfused diaphragm preparation.2. Verapamil-induced contracture was characterized by a biphasic increase in muscle tension consisting of an initial phasic and subsequent tonic contracture.3. The second tonic component of the verapamil-induced contracture was inhibited by procaine, but procaine had no effect on the initial phasic contracture.4. Verapamil potentiated both KCl- and caffeine-induced contractures during the second tonic stage. This action might be explained by enhancement by the drug of availability, or by an increased sensitivity of the contractile machinery to calcium liberated by membrane depolarization or by the calcium-induced calcium release mechanism.5. The second tonic component of verapamil-induced contracture was much less than the initial phasic component. It seems, therefore, that the calcium release induced by the procaine-resistant process is the principal action of verapamil in inducing contracture in skeletal muscle.

    Notizen: We have deqeloped a para-carotid approach for internal jugular cannulation which utlizes only the carotid artery as a landmark. This technique allows us to locatedhe puncture site regardless of an individual patient's physical, skeletal or postural variations. This study was undertaken in the period from January 1979 to June 1980 on 456 consecutive patients in a wide range of age groups and various clinical conditions. The overall success rate was 96.1%. The only complications encountered during our study were Five carotid artery punctures with formation of two haematomas.

    Notizen: Abstract The sporangiophore (spph) of a piloboloid mutant, genotype pil, of Phycomyces ceases elongation and expands radially in the growth zone shortly after reaching the developmental stage IV b. The pil spph is always negatively phototropic to unilateral visible light when its diameter exceeds 210 μm. Photoinduction of spph initiation, light-growth response, threshold of light energy fluence rate for the negative phototropism, avoidance and gravitropism in the pil mutant are all normal. In liquid paraffin, the pil spph shows negative phototropism as does the wild-type spph. Genetic analyses indicate that the negative phototropism of the pil mutant is governed by the phenotypic characteristics of pil but not by specific gene(s) responsible for negative phototropism. These facts imply that the reverse phototropism of the pil mutant results from a loss of the convergent lens effect of the cell because of the increase in cell diameter.

    Notizen: Summary Human rotavirus “KUN” strain was cultivated in a fetal rhesus monkey kidney cell line, MA 104 cells. Four types of virus particles in cells infected with KUN strain were clearly identified: nucleoid cores, single-shelled particles, double-shelled particles, and membrane band, “enveloped” particles. “Enveloped” particles were found only in the thin sections of infected cells. When first visible, the virus precursors appeared at the ribosome free membrane of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), increasing in size while simultaneously being coated with nucleocapsid, inner shell. Single-shelled particles were also synthesized within bundles of filaments of viroplasm in the cytoplasma. During subsequent virus maturation two types of “budding” processes were observed. Double-shelled particles arising at the RER membrane entered the cisternae of the RER through an exocytosis-like process. In contrast, the “enveloped” particles developed in the cisternae by being completely enclosed with RER membrane, and later during cytolysis released the single-shelled particles. These “enveloped” virus particles appeared to be the result of inefficient virus maturation at the last stage of outer capsid formation.

    Notizen: Summary In exercised female rats, the elastin content of the thoracic and abdominal aorta decreased by 4–8% (p〈0.05). The collagen content in the thoracic aorta, was unchanged but in the abdominal aorta was reduced by 5.2% (p〈0.05). These results are discussed in connection with physical training.

    Notizen: Summary We have studied the correlations between computed tomograms (CT), clinical severity at the time of onset, and subsequent development of cerebral infarction due to vasospasm in 32 cases with subarachnoid haemorrhage secondary to rupture of cerebral aneurysms. It was found that the clinical severity could be judged by CT as shown by the amount of blood in subarachnoid space. Furthermore, it was possible to predict the subsequent occurrence of cerebral infarction by sequential findings of CT. A Hounsfield number of the high density area over 60 showed good correlation with the development of cerebral infarction.
