Notes: Summary Four different regions of the brain (the mamillary bodies, vermis of the cerebellum, the dorsal and medial part of thalamus, and the quadrigeminal plate) from nine male chronic alcoholics and nine controls were analyzed for morphological and biochemical abnormalities. The mamillary bodies, in contrast to the other three regions, showed loss of myelinated fibers and decreased concentrations of cerebrosides, cholesterol and phospholipids, indicating demyelination. It is concluded that this kind of lesion is common in chronic alcoholism.

Notes: [Auszug] The effects of felodipine were studied in the isolated rat portal vein. The smooth muscle of this vessel shows many similarities to that of the haemodynamically important small resistance vessels, including its pronounced dependence on extracellular [Ca2+] (refs 3-5). Notes: Abstract A state of severe respiratory depression and mental confusion after cimetidine administration in a patient with normal renal and hepatic function is described. The condition was reversed by a bolus dose of 2 mg physostigmine IV followed by a continuous infusion of 3.75 mg/h. The possibility of CNS side effects from cimetidine and the antagonism of physostigmine is emphasized, particularly in cases with stress ulcers related to intracranial disorders where sedation and respiratory depression have to be avoided.

Notes: Abstract The textural, mineralogical, compositional and paleontological characteristics of an iron-cemented allochthonous sediment slab recovered from a zone of slumping between water depths of 2,100 and 2,350 m on the lower continental slope off Cape Hatteras are summarized. Results support interpretation of the sediment slab as the oxidized equivalent of pyrite-cemented Pleistocene to Recent sediment, an uncommon form of lithification in deep sea sediments. We propose that exposure of such slumped sediment slabs to seawater has produced an alteration sequence from pyrite-cement to iron oxide-cement. These observations extend the range of pyrite-cemented sediment initially reported from water depths between 4,770 and 4,950 m on the lower continental rise off Cape Hatteras.

Notes: Abstract The phosphorus release from surface sediments of eight lakes, mainly shallow lakes in agricultural areas, was studied in laboratory batch experiments with additions of acetate and/ or nitrate. The lake sediments could be separated into three categories. Some sediments did not release phosphorus under any conditions. The second category showed a high phosphorus release rate when acetate was added, in order to stimulate bacterial activity and oxygen consumption. The addition of nitrate, only, stabilized the redox conditions and prevented phosphorus release. This pattern followed the classical theories of Einsele and Mortimer. The third sediment category released phosphorus up to some level which remained constant throughout the experiment, and was independent of acetate and/or nitrate additions. Several extraction procedures and adsorption-desorption experiments were performed in order to characterize the sediment phosphorus and thus explain the different behaviours of the three sediment categories.
