    Notes: Summary Four different regions of the brain (the mamillary bodies, vermis of the cerebellum, the dorsal and medial part of thalamus, and the quadrigeminal plate) from nine male chronic alcoholics and nine controls were analyzed for morphological and biochemical abnormalities. The mamillary bodies, in contrast to the other three regions, showed loss of myelinated fibers and decreased concentrations of cerebrosides, cholesterol and phospholipids, indicating demyelination. It is concluded that this kind of lesion is common in chronic alcoholism.

    Notes: Abstract: The membrane lipid composition of human brain has been studied in 21 men and 18 women 60–97 years of age. This brain tissue series is unique, because it has been obtained only from individuals who lived a normal social life in their own homes and died suddenly and unexpectedly from arteriosclerotic heart disease or ruptured aortic aneurysms. They had no history of neurological or psychiatric disease. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations ruled out any signs of organic brain disorder. The percentage of solids diminished continuously during the whole period, but the marked individual differences suggested large variations in the hydration of the brain. The content of membrane lipids also diminished continuously up to 90 years of age, when a marked diminution in level of gangliosides and cerebrosides occurred, a result indicating a rapid reduction in amount of neuronal membranes and myelin. The clinical implications of the variation in brain hydration and the rapid loss of membrane lipids after 90 years of age are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract: The membrane lipid composition of human frontal and temporal cortices and white matter has been studied in 118 subjects, age 20–100 years. The brain specimens were selected from subjects who lived a normal social life and died suddenly and unexpectedly with no history of neurologic or psychiatric disease. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations ruled out any signs of organic brain disorder. The sudden death eliminated all risk of changes over a long agonal stage. The data for total solids and major lipids are summarized in graphic form. Total solids, phospholipids, and cholesterol diminished linearly from 20 years of age in frontal and temporal cortices, whereas total solids phospholipids, cholesterol, cerebroside, and sulfatide showed a curvilinear diminution in frontal and temporal white matter. Gangliosides differed from the other lipids, showing an almost constant concentration between 20 and 70 years of age with a slight peak around 50 years of age. The ganglioside pattern showed continuous change with aging, with decreasing proportions of GM1 and GD1a and increasing proportions of GD1b, GM3, and GD3. Equations are given that can be used to calculate the lipid composition of normal human frontal and temporal cortices and white matter at any age between 20 and 100 years of age. These data can be used where data by direct analysis are not available for comparison with values for various pathological states.

    Notes: Abstract In our attempt to develop an “Essential Data Set” for a computer based information system to support Maternal & Child Health Care services an analysis of Swedish maternal care services was undertaken. The present study analyses the information system in the domain of maternal and child health care at the primary health center level with a view to identify areas where a computer-based medical record could effect improvements. The study showed that even in a well organized maternal care service as in Sweden lacunae exist in the information system. The paper forms, called MHV1, MHV2, MHV3 and FV1, though well designed, were incomplete in a large number of the cases. The MHV1 forms were completed in less than 45%, the MHV 2 form in 87.5% and the FV1 form in 70% of the cases. Certain elements of the data set were less likely to be completed than others. Another weak spot was the inaccessibility of the paper records during off-hours. These deficiencies could be eliminated by the use of a computerized medical record based on an essential data set.

    Notes: Résumé Les bactéries suivantes:Nitrosocystis oceanus, Nitrosomonas europaea, Nitrobacter agilis et Thiobacillus thiooxidans ont été cultivées en milieu solide dans une atmosphère dont on a varié la teneur en oxygène. On a trouvé que la croissance de toute ces bactéries a été arrêtée en présence d'un excès d'oxygène (90%). D'autre part l'oxydation de l'ammonium du nitrite et du thiosulfate n'a pas été inhibée par oxygène.
