Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Of 64 unselected, consecutive patients with perforated ulcers treated by PGV, 5 patients died (8%), all over 65 years of age. Postoperative complications were common (34%). Of the survivors, 86% were followed up for 4 years (median). The recurrence rate was 10%, 7% among duodenal ulcers. Pyloroplasty had only been performed in 20%, including pyloric perforation, but no late obstruction occurred. PGV is an immediate definitive procedure which gives much better long-term results than simple closure of the perforation without carrying an unacceptable operative risk.
