Notizen: Polyphenylalamine synthesis by cytoplasmic ribosomes of Gateway barley (Hordeum vulgare) and its virescens single gene nuclear mutant was compared. The cytoplasmic 80S ribosomes were isolated from unimbibed embryo material and the ribosomes were dissociated into their component 60S and 40S subunits by centrifugation through sucrose gradients containing high KCl-to-MgCl2 buffer. These separated subunits could be reassociated by resuspension in buffer having about equimolar concentrations of MgCl2 and KCl. Both homologous and heterologous combinations of the subunits reassociated to give monomeric 80S ribosomes, and the derived monomers as well as various combinations of the individual subunits showed equivalent activity in an in vitro system for poly (U)-directed polyphenylalanine synthesis.

Notizen: Summary In order to visualize regional blood flow in various tissues of the mouse at the same time, the distribution of radioactive carbon from 14C-iodoantipyrine was studied by whole-body autoradiography. The mice were frozen with Dry-Ice-hexane at 1, 10, 30 min, and 1 h and 3 h after intravenous injection of 14C-iodoantipyrine. Whole-sagittal sections of the frozen mouse, obtained by using a cryostat microtome, were dried in a cryostat and subjected to autoradiography. The resulting dry autoradiographs are called untreated autoradiographs in the present work. The sections were then fixed in cold 6% (w/v) HClO4, dried at room temperature and again subjected to autoradiography. Autoradiographs thus obtained are referred to as treated autoradiographs. It was found that the method could be suitable for the estimation of regional blood flow of the renal cortex, spleen, lung, skeletal muscle, bone marrow, thymus, testes, and brain.

Notizen: Summary In this study, the authors evaluate the importance of computed tomography (CT) in 15 patients who underwent surgical treatment for cervical disc disease. In nine operated on by an anterior approach, all CT examinations were interpreted as positive for disc herniation and correlated precisely with surgical observations. CT demonstrated protrusion of the disc, centrally in four and posterolaterally in five in all of whom disc material was found posterior to the vertebral body. Of six who underwent laminectomy, either thickening or calcification of the ligamentum flavum was demonstrated by CT and confirmed at surgery in five. Vacuum phenomenon in the intervertebral space and hypertrophy of the intervertebral joint were not infrequently associated. CT can exactly delineate cervical disc lesions and associated pathological changes.
