Notes: Nociceptive information may be inhibited by stimulation of opiate receptors located presynaptically on primary afferent neurons. Sensory signals entering the spinal chord inhibit nociceptive signals by a non-opioid “gate” mechanism. Descending systems also modulate pain sensitivity at the spinal level. The descending 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) system has a tonic inhibitory function, with diurnal fluctuations in intensity. The strong analgesic effects of electrical stimulation and morphine microinjections in certain brainstem structures is probably mediated by other descending systems. The ascending 5-HT system may influence the results of some complex tests for pain sensitivity by altering e.g. emotionality and habituation rate. Acupuncture analgesia involves opioid systems. In high frequency electroacupuncture and transcutaneous nerve stimulation, a non-opioid “gate” mechanism may predominate. Acute stress may produce analgesia by opioid as well as non-opioid mechanisms. The control of pain sensitivity is influenced by learning (e.g. biofeedback techniques and social factors), and may be affected in depression, mania and schizophrenia.

Notes: To investigate the role of SB in MLC typing responses, reactions of lymphocytes from 23 DW3-positive. HLA-D-heterozygous individuals against 9 Dw3 homozygous typing cells (HTCs) were evaluated. Significantly more clear typing reactions were observed in those combinations that were matched for SB us compared with those that were mismatched. Nevertheless, MLC responses towards HTCs that were HLA-D/DR- and SB-compatible could be very strong. An additional analysis of the influence of HLA-B and the newly defined determinants LB–Q1 and LB–Q2 demonstrated that in combinations that were matched for these markers as well, stabilized relative responses could still he over 100%.

Notes: Abstract Predation has been demonstrated to be of fundamental importance in structuring benthic communities in the intertidal zone. The aim of the present investigation was to elucidate some of the effects of predation on structuring communities in unvegetated subtidal sediments. Field manipulative cage experiments were performed on sediment in the inner part of the Oslofjord (Norway), where the species composition was typical for a moderately organically enriched sediment. Sediment from this area was transferred to an area not suspected a priori to be seriously affected by organic pollution, and the effect of predation on the fauna was evaluated. Predation effects were not observed in the Oslofjord experiments partially because of extensive obstruction of recruitment to the sediment by settlement ofPolydora antennata on the cage; however, further experiments are in progress in this area. No such settling was observed in the unpolluted area. Here 63 taxonomic groups were identified, 57 in the control and 50 in the cages; 43 taxonomic groups were found in both the cage and the control. The total number of individuals was significantly higher in the cage (4779) than in the control (2849). The fauna recruited to the sediment in the cage responded to decreased predation by macropredators by a significant reduction in diversity. Of the 10 most abundant groups 3 (Tellinacea, Syllidae andPholoë minuta) were significantly more abundant in the cage than in the control; 3 others (Prionospio malmgreni, Microphthalmus abberans and Paraonidea) were significantly more abundant in the control. It is concluded that in an unpolluted area predation is an important factor in controlling numbers of at least some of the most abundant species. However, the effect of predation does not seem to be of the same importance in the subtidal as has previously been recognized for unvegetated intertidal mudflats.

Notes: Summary Serum-sialyltransferase activity was measured in serum samples of 116 patients with malignant tumors of various origins and different clinical stages using asialo-fetuin as the acceptor and cytidine-5′-mono-phospho[14C]sialic acid as the donor. Only patients with metastatic tumors had significantly elevated serum-sialyltransferase levels. Increased enzyme activity was also associated with rheumatoid arthritis and with acute hepatitis, whereas no significant alteration of enzyme activity was observed in cystic fibrosis patients. In a group of tumor patients, various additional tumor markers were determined (carcinoembryonic antigen, alkaline phosphatase: Regan isoenzyme, creatinekinase: BB-isoenzyme, lactatedehydrogenase: isoenzyme 5) and the data compared to the clinical diagnoses. The sensitivity and specifity of serum-sialyltransferase as a tumor marker is assessed.

Notes: Summary Sialyltransferase (ST) activity was examined in tumor and control tissues. Within each group of control tissues a wide variation in the levels of ST activity was observed. Only in 20% of the tumors was the ST activity above the range of enzyme activity of the corresponding group of control tissues. Compared with its corresponding normal counterpart from the same individual, ST was elevated in tumor tissue by a factor of 2.1 on average. The distribution function indicates an increase in enzyme activity in 74% of the tumors. Other tumor markers were also determined for comparison. The ratio of the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) subunits (M/H) was increased in tumors by a factor of 1.3 on average; the frequency of increase was 75%. From the distribution function of our data it follows that a decrease in the ratio of the creatine kinase (CK) subunits (B/M) occurs in 56% of tumors, the average factor being 0.8. The Regan isoenzyme of the alkaline phosphatase (AP) could be demonstrated in 13% of the tumors. In serum and in tissues ST was found to be composed of multiple forms. However, an isoenzyme of higher tumor specificity has not yet been established.

Notes: Abstract Intrathecal injection of metergoline reduced the response latencies in the tail-flick and hot-plate tests, supporting the contention that descending 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) pathways tonically inhibit pain sensitivity. Elevated latencies were, however, observed after both intraperitoneal (IP) and intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections in the hot-plate test, when hindpaw lick was used as the response criterion. These findings may indicate that supraspinal 5-HT pathways tonically increase pain responsiveness in certain test situations. Alternative hypotheses are that metergoline in supraspinal structures acts as an agonist at post-synaptic 5-HT receptors mediating antinociception, or as an antagonist at pre-synaptic 5-HT receptors. Recording of first reaction latencies on the hot-plate showed increased thresholds after IP, but not after ICV injections. This may indicate an action on 5-HT receptors in the brain not accessible after ICV injections, or that the effect is mediated by blockade of peripheral 5-HT receptors.
