Notes: Summary. Fourier analysis was applied to episodes of high and low heart-rate variation in the near-term fetus. The spectral densities of the variations in pulse intervals from 1 to 7 cycles/min, were almost identical with those found by De Haan et al. (1977) in the newborn infant during both active and quiet sleep. A computer programme, designed to separate low and high heart-rate variation episodes in the fetus, identified seven of the eight quiet sleep episodes in four infants. None of the other neonatal behavioural states had low heart-rate variation. It was concluded that, with other published data, there is increasing, although indirect, evidence that low heart-rate variation episodes indicate quiet sleep in the human fetus near term.

Notes: A seismic source consisting of a 700 kg weight that could be dropped vertically or projected down a ramp inclined at 45° to the vertical was tested as a source of P, SV and SH waves within a crystalline rock body at Chalk River, Ontario. The seismic energy was recorded by arrays of both horizontal and vertical-component geophones at distances between 30 and 600 m from the source, which was operated over glacial overburden varying in thickness from less than a meter to a few tens of meters. Seismic energy was more efficiently generated when the overburden thickness was at least several meters. The signals identified visually as S are generally true S, though some may be the converted wave PS. The SV amplitudes are generally larger than those of P, regardless of the type of shot, while the signal frequencies are roughly 60 Hz and 90 Hz, respectively. The horizontal-component seismograms for the inclined shots showed no evidence of SH polarization, and the SH amplitudes were only rarely enhanced relative to P and SV amplitudes on changing from vertical to inclined shots. These unexpected results are attributed to the combined effect of the high velocity and density contrasts and the irregularity of the boundary between the glacial overburden and the rock body.

Notes: Summary A patient with agenesis of the temporal lobe and an arachnoid cyst was studied by radionuclide cisternography. The value of cisternography in establishing communication between the cyst and the subarachnoid space is emphasized.

Notes: Summary Differential scanning calorimetry of polymeric F-actin at pH 8.0 showed that the polymer had a concentration-independent thermal profile with a single transition temperature of 81 °C. In contrast, the thermal profile of G-actin was concentration-dependent, and although it resembled the F-actin profile at lower concentrations, it was found to have a more complex profile at higher protein concentrations.

Notes: Summary Novomessor albisetosus andN. cockerelli foraged most intensively in the evening and morning at soil surface temperatures between 20°C and 40°C. They were not active in the middle of the night and mid-day. In both species, colonies provided with supplementary seeds increased their foraging intensity.N. cockerelli colonies which we provided with high protein food (tuna fish) extended their foraging time and remained active until soil surface temperatures reached lethal levels. Nearly half of the natural forage ofN. cockerelli was insects or insect parts which accounted for only 6.6% of the forage ofN. albisetosus. Approximately 10% of the workers ofN. cockerelli entered and were apparently accepted by colonies other then their “home” conoly. This study demonstrates the importance of both forage availability and forage quality as determinants of activity and forage selection ofNovomessor sp.

Notes: Abstract A new series of ultra-deep, wide-angle Hα filter photographs at higher angular resolution than hitherto achieved, have been obtained covering the Orion-Taurus-Eridanus region. These reveal new, both diffuse and filamentary nebulosities near the Barnard Arc Nebula, which are correlated with Hi features in the region. Mechanisms capable of producing the observed features are discussed. Both a stellar wind bubble and a fossil supernova remnant are considered possible explanations, and would represent the nearest examples of these features to the Sun. Furthermore, nebulosity in this region has been photographed for the first time at [Nii]. The possible implications of this and other observations are discussed.
