    Notes: Abstract Seven dives in the submersible ALVIN and four deep-towed (ANGUS) camera lowerings have been made at the eastern ridge-transform intersection of the Oceanographer Transform with the axis of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These data constrain our understanding of the processes that create and shape the distinctive morphology that is characteristic of slowly-slipping ridge-transform-ridge plate boundaries. Although the geological relationships observed in the rift valley floor in the study area are similar to those reported for the FAMOUS area, we observe a distinct change in the character of the rift valley floor with increasing proximity to the transform. Over a distance of approximately ten kilometers the volcanic constructional terrain becomes increasingly more disrupted by faulting and degraded by mass wasting. Moreover, proximal to the transform boundary, faults with orientations oblique to the trend of the rift valley are recognized. The morphology of the eastern rift valley wall is characterized by inward-facing scarps that are ridge-axis parallel, but the western rift valley wall, adjacent to the active transform zone, is characterized by a complex fault pattern defined by faults exhibiting a wide range of orientations. However, even for transform parallel faults no evidence for strike-slip displacement is observed throughout the study area and evidence for normal (dip-slip) displacement is ubiquitous. Basalts, semi-consolidated sediments (chalks, debris slide deposits) and serpentinized ultramafic rocks are recovered from localities within or proximal to the rift valley. The axis of accretion-principal transform displacement zone intersection is not clearly established, but appears to be located along the E-W trending, southern flank of the deep nodal basin that defines the intersection of the transform valley with the rift floor.

    Notes: Summary We show that, when the equations for the wave-hierarchy problems discussed by Whitham (1974) are augmented by a term expressing dissipation, the linearised stability condition remains unaltered. Further, we show that when the basic uniform state is unstable, it can restabilise into a quasi-steady periodic state, parametrized by the propagation speed.

    Notes: Summary The evolution of a small-amplitude localized voidage disturbance through a two-dimensional fluidized bed is considered. A solution of the full initial-value problem reveals that the stability condition for the uniform state is found to be in agreement with that given by Needham and Merkin [1] for narrow beds. Further, it is shown that for a given flow rate for which the uniform state is unstable, more and more cross-channel modes become instable with increasing bed width, in accordance with the observations of Didwania and Homsy [3]. Finally a solution is obtained forF ≪ 1, whereF is the Froude number. The resulting Fourier series is summed numerically, which enables the evolution of the initial disturbance to be followed by plotting contours of constant voidage with increasing time. This shows that in narrow beds the motion is primarily one-dimensional, confirming the supposition of [1], with cross-stream variations becoming more dominant as the bed width increases.

    Notes: A method is presented that can be utilized for the removal of formalin-fixed tissues from arterial grafts without. Affecting fiber material properties. Such a method could prove highly useful for studying the changes in the structure and properties of graft fiber as functions of important clinical variables. Information on what actually happens to the arterial graft material in situ with passage of time is greatly lacking in the current graft literature. The method proposed involves treatment of the formalin fixed fiber-tissue complex with an enzymatic preparation containing enzymes derived from the porcine pancreas (pancreatin) in solution with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane buffer at pH 7.6. Studies with two different grafts - a Microknit Dacron Bifurcation from a clinical patient 10¼ years after implantation and stored in formalin for 11 months, and a Sauvage Filamentous Velour of Dacron from an animal 24 h after implantation and stored in formalin for nine months - showed that the treatment was highly effective in completely removing the tissues at concentrations of pancreatin as low as 2.5%. The same treatment given to the virgin yarns of grafts revealed no significant effects on tensile, dimensional, and morphological properties.
