Notes: Abstract. Trophonts of Pisdnoodinium pillulare (Schäperclaus, 1954), a common ectoparasite of freshwater aquarium fish, are attached to host cells by means of a specialized structure, the attachment disc. Unlike other dinoflagellate genera parasitic on fish and invertebrates, this disc features nail-like organelles, the rhizocysts. Head-parts of the rhizocysts are inverted in separate compartments, rhizothecas, in the sole of the disc while their long shafts are firmly embedded in the cytoplasm of cells of the host epidermis or gill epithelium. The attachment inflicts a serious injury on the host cells which may ultimately be destroyed. Rhizocysts originate in the subnuclear cytoplasm from where they migrate into the attachment disc. There are other specialized organelles and inclusions; fibrous vesicles, membraneous bodies, striated tubular bodies and paracrystalline bodies. Pisdnoodinium has well-developed chloroplasts. While its cytological adaptations indicate a nutritional dependence on the host, there is no evidence of ingestion of host-derived particulate material. Pisdnoodinium may derive an essential part of its nutrition from photosynthesis.

Notes: Summary Male Wistar rats were used to study changes in ultrastructure of proximal renal tubular cells after an haemoglobin (Hb) load with or without temporary renal ischaemia. An i.v. injection of stroma-free Hb was given either 30 min before, immediately after, or 2 h after ischaemia. Appropirate control groups were used for comparison. Electron microscopic examination was performed on kidneys removed 48 h after treatment. Hb transport and degradation was markedly delayed by renal ischaemia. Hetero-ambi-and autolysosomer were found after Hb load, and the number of lysosomes was higher in animals with ischaemia than in sham-operated controls given Hb. Renal cellular damage was more pronounced in rats given Hb either 30 min before or 2 h after ischaemia than in those subjected to either Hb load or ischaemia alone. The findings show deleterious effects of haemoglobinuria in conjunction with renal ischaemia.

Notes: Summary Texture examinations were made on 416 thin section and on 1,000 grain preparations of calcium oxalate calculi. The frequency of occurrence of four basic texture types in relation to pathological urine parameters, age and sex of the patients as well as types of stone removal are discussed. Percentage share of texture type I that correlates to hyperuricosuria shows a steady increase with increasing age. The proportions of types III and IV that are linked to hypercalciuria decrease with increasing age. The examinations show the feasibility of texture-type determinations within routine stone analysis and create the precondition for texture types to be included in metaphylaxis of calcium oxalate lithiasis.

Notes: Summary Urolithiasis is a rare complication following kidney transplantation. Experience with this complication in 6 of 426 transplantations performed from 1968 to 1979 is reviewed. The clinical symptoms are different from the disease in non-transplant patients. Three major predisposing causes for the development of calculi after kidney transplantation were found in our patients — urodynamic disorders following complications of the ureterovesical anastomosis, persistent bacteriuria and renal tubular acidosis and, less importantly, the presence of hypertacemia and hypercalciuria as a result of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Crystal-optical and x-ray-diffraction studies contributed to the interpretation of the constituents and texture of the calculi and of the aetiological factors concerned.

Notes: Abstract This study presents a survey of the textural forms of calcium oxalate calculi. We have classified this texture into four basic types. The transformation mechanism of weddellite into whewellite is discussed at length. According to our investigations there are two ways of formation of whewellite calculi: 1. primary formation of whewellite, and 2. secondary formation by way of weddellite transformation.

Notes: Abstract In comparative histological and cytological studies on 270 prostatic carcinoma patients highly and moderately differentiated tumors were found to be more frequent histologically than cytologically. An early and reliable sign of response to hormone therapy proved to be reticularization and vacuolization of the nuclear chromatin. Follow-up studies by means of multiple aspiration biopsies with cytologic examinations seem to be more reliable in prognostic terms than examination of the histological tumor structure.

Notes: Steroids. 66. 1H-N.M.R.-Investigations. Configurational Assignment of 15, 16, 17-Trisubstituted SteroidsThe 1H-n.m.r.-spectra of 15, 16, 17-trisubstituted estra-1,3,5(10)-trienes are discussed in view of the configurational assignment of the substituents. A reliable elucidation of their stereo-chemistry is possible on the basis of the coupling constants J16H,17H, J15H,16H and J14αH,15H. Additional parameters are the chemical shifts of the 15-, 16-, 17- and 18-protons (13β-methyl group) and the downfield shift of carbinol proton signals, caused by the reaction of hydroxyl groups with trichloroacetyl isocyanate. The chemical shifts of the 13β-methyl group can be calculated for compounds with trans configuration from substituent increments and for the other compounds by comparison with the chemical shifts of 16, 17-disubstituted compounds. The influence of different 16α-substituents on the chemical shifts of 15α- and 17α-protons is investigated. The downfield shifts of 15- and 17-proton signals due to the addition of trichloroacetyl isocyanate to 15, 17-diols depend on the configuration of the 16-substituents.
