Notes: Abstract An upper limit has been calculated on the effective aperture separation or detector thickness of ion drift meters of two fundamental types. The limit applies to meters which compare currents collected by detectors with different view directions at the same retarding potential and to meters which measure the entire thermal ion distribution function. For both types, a single scanned detector may be employed instead of multiple detectors, in which case the limit applies to twice the radius of curvature of the path followed by the detector aperture during a scan, (i.e. the diameter of a spinning payload). The limit was found to be important in two cases. First, in the F region on spacecraft with stringent electrostatic cleanliness requirements, the 10% error limit was found to be 40 cm. Second, in the E region, the limit was found to be ≲1 cm.

Notes: Summary In 42 patients with untreated or treated multiple myeloma (MM) or benign monoclonal gammopathy (BMG) the lymphocytes and T lymphocyte subsets were determined by monoclonal antibodies and other surface markers. In untreated MM, the T cells (1077/μl vs 1439/μl, P〈0.01) and especially the OKT4+ lymphocytes (700/μl vs 950/μl, P〈0.05) were significantly reduced compared with a control group. The OKT8+ cells were slightly but not significantly decreased. In previously treated MM, the loss of T cells was more pronounced than in the untreated group and was primarily caused by a further reduction of OKT4+ cells. Patients with BMG revealed decreased OKT8+ lymphocytes (304/μl vs 502/μl, P〈0.001), whereas the OKT4+ cells were within the normal range. Therefore, the OKT4/OKT8 ratio was significantly elevated compared with that in untreated MM patients and normal controls (3.31 vs 2.06 vs 2.13; P〈0.005). To sum up, in MM the results revealed a reduction of T cells, mainly of OKT4+ cells, which is intensified by chemotherapy and persists even after a long therapy-free interval. The different findings of T cell subsets in BMG and MM may be a helpful criterion to differentiate between BMG and MM.

Notes: Summary Antibodies to intermediate filament (IF) proteins can distinguish the major tumor groups as shown by results with sectioned human material. In this study we evaluate the use of similar methods in the cytology of human tumors. Smears obtained from fine needle aspiration biopsies were investigated using well characterized antibodies, each specific for only one of the five types of intermediate filaments. Tumor cells of different carcinomas, thymomas, and the epithelial part of pulmonary blastomas were positive with antibodies recognizing cytokeratins. Tumor cells in non-muscle sarcomas, including lymphoma and Ewing's sarcoma, could be specifically identified with antibodies to vimentin. Tumor cells of muscle sarcomas were desmin-positive. Finally, tumor cells in pheochromocytoma and bronchus carcinoid were positive with antibodies specific for neurofilaments. Specimens were also examined in parallel using conventional cytochemical stains, such as May-Grünwald-Giemsa. In addition, in most cases sections of the tumor were examined both by histology and IF typing of frozen sections to confirm the diagnosis made on the cytologic specimens. The results show that IF typing is a valuable diagnostic aid in clinical cytology.

Notes: Summary Antibodies to different intermediate-sized filament proteins can distinguish cells and tissues of epithelial, mesenchymal, muscle, astrocytic and neural origin. Antibodies to prekeratin, vimentin and desmin have been used to distinguish cells of epithelial, mesenchymal and muscle origin in the normal human parotid gland, and in addition to study some common tumors of this gland. Prekeratin-positive and vimentin-positive cells are found among the tumor cells in the pleomorphic adenomas. In contrast the tumor cells of the mucoepidermoid tumors and squamous cell carcinomas are prekeratin-positive but vimentin-negative.

Notes: Summary An indirect immunofluorescence technique for the determination of antibodies against ixodid tick spirochetes is described. Differences in the reactivity betweenIxodes ricinus spirochete andIxodes dammini spirochete antigens were not observed. Cross-reacting antibodies againstTreponema pallidum andTreponema phagedenis can be eliminated by quantitative absorption withT. phagedenis. Cross-reactions with leptospira were not observed by immunofluorescence. In the IgM test, false negative reactions caused by high-titered specific IgG antibodies or false positive reactions caused by rheumatoid factor occur. This can be avoided by testing the IgM fraction (19S-IgM-test) or using sera previously treated with anti-IgG serum. Significantly elevated antibody titers against ixodid tick spirochetes were observed in 45% of 44 cases with erythema migrans disease, in 72% of 29 cases of lymphocytic meningoradiculitis, in all of nine patients with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans and in all of four investigated patients with lymphocytoma (lymphadenosis benigna cutis).

Notes: Summary One of the important stages in the process of interaction between a particle and a gas bubble in the liquid phase is the expansion of three-phase contact perimeter immediately after rupture of the thin liquid film. The rate of expansion for the system flat quartz surface/liquid dodecylamine hydrochloride solution is determined by use of a high-speed camera. The results were discussed on the basis of a theory on hydrodynamics of thin liquid films.

Notes: Abstract Phonon properties concerning propagation, frequency spectrum and lifetime in the Terahertz range have been investigated. The phonons have been produced by square wave Joule heating of thin constantan films evaporated onto a strongly doped ruby. Cross sections for phonon scattering at the Cr3+ impurity ions of the ruby were determined as a function of frequency. The theoretical estimate for mass defect scattering given by Klemens [9] is found to agree reasonably with the experimental results. Lifetime measurements indicate that phonons in ruby preferentially propagate in the transversal mode. Phonon frequency spectra in the constantan films were measured under experimental conditions, where the strength of electron phonon coupling is significant; thus electron-phonon relaxation times could be obtained as a function of frequency.
