Notes: Labour was successfully induced by the extra-amniotic administration of prostaglandins E2 in 69 patients of widely varying maturity. Sixty-two babies were delivered in satisfactory condition, three died during labour, and there were four anencephalic infants. The use of extra-amniotic prostaglandins can be considered if induction is required in particularly unfavourable circumstances or where there is a wish to avoid artificial rupture of the membranes.

Notes: Abstract The magnetostriction of Fe2+ ions introduced by Si4+ in YIG, has been measured at low temperatures by means of strain gauges. It is substantially larger at 77°K than at 4°K. This is explained by electron migration at elevated temperatures, leading to a decrease in perturbing potential of the Si ions by a factor two.

Notes: Summary 95 % of 1732 patients were followed up. The proportion of men to women was 7:1, most patients being about 70 years old. 80 % of the patients smoked; 64% were considered inoperable when first seen and 4 were found to be incurable at operation. 8.2 % died postoperatively; 3 bronchopleural fistulas and 17 pleural empyemas complicated recovery. 5-year-survival of operated patients without lymph node involvement was 45.5 %, with lymph node metastasis 14.7 %. 86 % of 242 non-operated patients with oat cell carcinoma died within the first year after hospital discharge. Only 1.2 % survived 5 years.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In den Jahren 1965–1970 wurden an der Chirurgischen Klinik rechts der Isar der Technischen Universität München 151 Gefäßverletzungen versorgt.
Notes: Summary From 1965–1970, 151 injuries to blood vessels were treated at the Chirurgische Klinik rechts der Isar der Technischen Universität, Munich. In over 80% of the patients other injuries like fractures, brain injuries or ruptures of the inner organs etc. were also present. The presence of hypovolaemic shock in multiple injuries can make the diagnosis of a vascular lesion much more difficult. An indication for immediate surgery is the threat of a fatal haemorrhage resulting from injuries to the main blood vessels. In most cases, however, the diagnosis of a vascular lesion will be confirmed by the selective use of angiography and phlebography. In about 30% of our patients the injuries to the blood vessels were associated with fractures. A stable osteosynthesis will make the restoration of the damaged blood vessels much easier. Injuries to veins should be attended to before arterial lesions and where necessary a thrombectomy carried out at the same time. To shorten the period of ischaemia and to avoid thrombosis in venous sections we usually establish a temporary intra-luminal shunt before commencing the osteosynthesis.
