Notes: Summary A 54-year-old man who had cerebellar ataxia and pseudobulbar palsy at the age of 29 years, and soon developed dementia, myoclonus and convulsions, died after about 20 years in a vegetative state. Histological examination of the extensively atrophic and devastated brain (680 g) revealed the almost total loss of cerebral cortical neurons associated with numerous β-protein amyloid plaques, many extracellular tangles and a large number of hypertrophic astrocytes, and prominent amyloid angiopathy. The astrocytes were frequently immunopositive for anti-human tau antibody (anti-htau) and anti-ubiquitin antibody (anti-ubi). Double immunostaining with anti-htau and anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) antibody clearly demonstrated htau-positive domains within the GFAP-positive perikarya/and processes of several astrocytes. Electron microscopy of the hippocampal CA1, which was completely devoid of pyramidal neurons, revealed, in astrocytes, abnormal filaments indistinguishable from the paired helical filaments (PHFs) seen in neurons. On immunoelectron microscopy, the filaments were observed to be labeled with anti-htau and anti-ubi, exhibiting the same immunohistochemical features as neuronal PHFs. This is the first demonstration of clearly constricted and both tau- and ubiquitin-positive PHFs in astrocytes, indicating that, in some special conditions like in our case, processes similar to those that attack neurons also affect astrocytes and ultimately make the latter form PHFs.

Notes: Abstract The determination of serum enzyme levels has been increasingly used in diagnosis of children's diseases. However, urinary enzymes have been little studied and many problems remain to be elucidated. As a possible guide to differential diagnosis and prognosis of children's diseases, the urinary enzyme levels were determined in 350 children with and without diseases. The urinary levels of lysozyme (MG=14,000), amylase (MG=45,000), alkaline phosphatase (AP, MG=100,000), glutamate transaminase (GOT, MG=100,000–120,000), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH, MG=140,000), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP, MG=300,000) and β-glucuronidase (MG=300,000) were measured simultaneously in each child. In the neonatal period the highest activities of alkaline phosphatase, glutamate transaminase and lysozyme were observed on the first and second day after birth. The urinary levels of alkaline phosphatase, glutamate transaminase and lactic dehydrogenase were elevated in more than half of the cases in the acute phase of glomerulonephritis, and gradually decreased down to normal levels during recovery. High levels of alkaline phosphatase, glutamate transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase and β-glucoronidase were found in some cases of orthostatic proteinuria. In nephrosis, however, the enzyme activities were mainly low. Abnormally high enzyme levels were observed in leukemia, neuroblastoma, pneumonia, hyperthyreoidism, hyperbilirubinemia, bronchial asthma, and diabetes mellitus. No correlation was found between the enzyme activities in the urine and serum.

Notes: Abstract The origin of urinary enzymes is obscure. We therefore determined the levels of urinary, serum and kidney enzymes (lysozyme, amylase, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, leucine aminopeptidase and β-glucuronidase) and isozymes (alkaline phosphatase, glutamate transaminase, leucine aminopeptidase and β-glucuronidase) in Wistar rats with nephrotoxin nephritis or aminonucleoside nephrosis. The urinary enzyme activities varied in several ways in rats with nephrotoxin nephritis and with aminonucleoside nephrosis. A significant difference in the isozymes was found in the two groups. The isozyme-pattern of urinary enzymes resembles that of kidney enzymes, but not that of serum enzymes. These findings indicate that the urinary enzymes are mainly formed by destruction and renewal of renal tissue.

Notes: Summary. A newly developed calcium antagonist, nilvadipine, was administered to 7 hypertensive patients aged 75.6 y. Nilvadipine 4 mg b.d. decreased the average 24-h blood pressure significantly from 169/89 mm Hg to 152/81 mm Hg after 7 to 14 days without any change in the pulse rate. The circadian patterns of blood pressure and pulse rate were not affected by nilvadipine. Although the present study was a preliminary one done over a short period in a small number of patients, the results suggest that nilvadipine exerts an antihypertensive effect without altering the circadian pattern or the variability of blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients.

Notes: The rotational spectra of H2S⋅CO2 and two deuterated forms have been observed using a pulsed-beam Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer. For each of the three complexes we assign a-type and c-type transitions which are split into a "weak'' and a "strong'' intensity component. The analysis based on that previously used for the (H2O)2 complex and modified for application to H2S⋅CO2, allowed us to assign internal rotation, inversion tunneling states of the H2S and CO2 units in the complex. The following rotational constants were determined for the ground tunneling state of each species: for H2S⋅CO2, A=11 048.0(26) MHz, B=2147.786(4) MHz, and C=1806.468(4) MHz; for HDS⋅CO2, A=10 769(35) MHz, B=2107.26(24) MHz, and C=1775.83(24) MHz; and for D2S⋅CO2, A=10 356.2(28) MHz, B=2065.376(8) MHz, and C=1746.122(8) MHz. The electric dipole moments were determined for the H2S⋅CO2 and D2S⋅CO2 species, resulting in the values μa=0.410(14) D and μc=0.822(10) D for the H2S⋅CO2 species. The structure of the complex has the CO2 and the S atom of H2S in a T-shaped configuration. The H2S plane is nearly orthogonal to the CO2–S plane with an angle of about 92° and the H2S⋅CO2 center-of-mass separation Rc.m. is 3.498(3) A(ring).

Notes: The rotational spectra of YO, LaO, ZrO, and HfO have been measured using a Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer in combination with a laser-ablation source. Here, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) was used to vaporize the metal oxides from a target source rod located in the throat of a pulsed-molecular-beam valve. A description of the instrument is given. The electric dipole moments of the four species have been measured and compared to ab initio results, where available. The experimental values are μYO =4.524(7), μLaO =3.207(11), μZrO =2.551(11), and μHfO =3.431(5) D. Of special note are the extremely large nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, eQq, determined for the 177HfO and 179HfO isotopic species, with values of −5952.649(35) MHz and −6726.981(39) MHz, respectively. This is the first determination of nuclear quadrupole coupling constants for a molecule containing the Hf atom.

Notes: The microwave spectrum of H2O–SO2 has been observed with a pulsed beam, Fabry–Perot cavity, Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer. In addition to the normal isotopic form, we have observed the spectra of H2O–34SO2, HDO–SO2, and D2O–SO2. For the normal and dideuterated forms we observe two states with a- and c-type spectra which are split by internal rotation of the water unit, while for the 34 S and HDO species two states are observed but only the a-type spectrum was assigned. Rotational analysis of each spectrum for H2O–SO2 provides the constants A=8763.071(3) MHz, B=3819.655(2) MHz, and C=2900.899(2) MHz for the I=0 state and A=8734.268(4) MHz, B=3821.281(2) MHz, and C=2900.837(2) MHz for the I=l state, where I is the resultant proton nuclear spin. Stark effect measurements give electric dipole components μa =1.984(2) D and μc =0.488(4) D for H2O–SO2. The geometry obtained from fitting the derived moments of inertia has the planes of the two monomer units tilted approximately 45° from the parallel orientation with the oxygen atom of the water closest to the S atom of SO2, giving an S–O distance of 2.824(16) A(ring) and a center-of-mass distance Rc.m. =2.962(5) A(ring). The (SO2)2 species was also produced with the same nozzle expansion conditions as used for H2O–SO2. New measurements on (SO2)2 are reported and fitted with the measurements from Nelson, Fraser and Klemperer [J. Chem. Phys. 83, 945 (1985)], providing improved rotational and centrifugal distortion constants.
