Notes: The pathway of bacteriophage λ head formation has been well characterized in vivo and in vitro (Hohn, Katsura & Hohn, 1977). First a petit λ particle consisting of a shell protein pE, a protein pNu3 and minor proteins, but lacking DNA, is formed. The pNu3-containing structure is then converted to a structure which does not contain pNu3, and which is capable of taking up and cutting the viral DNA. The purpose of this work is to determine the scaffold structure, formed by pNu3, by small-angle scattering techniques based on the known physico-chemical properties of pNu3-containing and pNu3-lacking particles (Künzler & Hohn, 1978). The scaffold is found to be inside the protein shell but less concentrated than the 130 Å radius core reported from electron micrographs.

Notes: Summary The identification of mistakes that relate to indications necessitating second operations of the efferent bile ducts, requires that there should be a close connection between symptoms and the morphological changes of the first and second operations. This is a report of 120 second and further operations, which were due to benign disorders of the bile ducts, out of 1,732 operations of the bile ducts during the last six years. 60 of the patients were specially examined with regard to possible mistakes of indications. These were the findings: 1. The indication for the first operation was determined too late. 2. The indication for the first operation was too narrow. 3. The indication for bilio-digestive anastomosis was wrong, in my view. 4. The indication for the second operation itself may have been wrong.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung von Hautstanzen von 3 Patienten mit Purpura pigmentosa progressiva (histologisch gesichert, positive Carbamidanamnese) ergab folgende Befunde: 1.
Notes: Summary An electron-microscopic investigation of the skin of 3 patients suffering from purpura pigmentosa progressiva due to bromocarbamide gave the following results: 1. In cellular infiltrates of the upper and middle corium we found perivascular cells representing monocytoide histiocytes. In addition, distinguish plasmacytoide histiocytes and tissue makrophages could be distinguished. The composition of the infiltrate supports the hypothesis that purpura pigmentosa progressiva is an allergic reaction of the delayed type. 2. It was not possible to definitely determine the degree of damage in the endothelial layer of the small blood vessels. However, erythrocytes were regularly observed between the basal membranes of the small blood vessels. Apparently in the pathogenesis of purpura pigmentosa progressiva relatively short and mild damage of the vessel plays a role. 3. During the course of the disease erythrocytes become surrounded by the basal cells and thus expelled transepidermally. The basal membrane on the epidermis cutis border remained essentially unchanged.

Notes: Summary From 275 specimens of all sorts of basal cell epitheliomas the new formation of elastic fibers was histologically investigated by means of selective elastic tissue stains such as orcein and resorcinfuchsin. In nearly one third of the basal cell epitheliomas newly formed elastic fibers could be observed in the stroma. In places where a new formation of elastic fibers was demonstrated fibroblasts and mast cells (toluidine blue stain) were unusually numerous. Apparently the influence of the growing tumor masses of basal cell epitheliomas leads to a dermo-epidermal interaction in the form of 1. increase of mast cells 2. stimulation of fibroblasts 3. new formation of elastic fibers. The observation suggest that there exists a relationship between the above noted findings. Due to the dermo-epithelial interaction (even in senile skin) in the stroma of basal cell epithelioma fibroblasts can be stimulated to such a degree that they regain the ability to produce elastic fibers—a function which usually is greatly diminished with increasing age. The findings seem to be important from the view point of rejuvenation of aging human skin.
