Notes: Summary Bromcarbamide-intoxication in three patients and 18 rabbits has been analysed. The patients died from the overdose, rabbits received the drug per os and died spontaneously or else they survived and were killed. In patients and in experimental studies identical results could be obtained: the initiating event seems to be the aggregation of thrombocytes and obstruction of the pulmonary vascular bed. Apparently, the thrombi circulate as could be demonstrated with intravital microscopy. Simultaneously endothelial defects, perivascular edema and dilatation of the lymphatics appear. The obstruction of the pulmonary vascular bed and the enhancement of permeability in the lung had a depressory effect on oxygen-uptake. Blood pressure raised in both the right ventricle and arteria pulmonalis. The results with bromcarbamide-poisoning are equivalent to findings in the shock lung syndrome, where microthrombosis plays a central role in the pathophysiological process. Both models can be usefully applied for the mutual understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. Pachydermodactyly is an acquired, asymptomatic swelling of the lateral sides of the fingers and is seen mainly in young men. The formal pathogenesis is a benign fibromatosis. The causal pathogenesis was until now unclear, although we believe, that exogenic factors are the main reason. Consequently pachydermodactyly has to be considered as a result of compulsion neurosis.

Notes: Light emitters based on real-space transfer devices can be brought about by several mechanisms. The most efficient of these is the injection of minority electrons across a semiconductor heterojunction into a p-type collecting layer. So far, problems associated with the growth of p-type collecting layers have hindered efforts in this area. In this letter we report on light emission caused by the real-space transfer of majority electrons into an n-type collecting layer. We propose a mechanism to account for this light which consists of hole creation by impact ionization of real-space transferred electrons.

Notes: Blue-green (λ=511 nm) separate confinement laser structures based on lattice-matched MgZnSSe-ZnSSe-CdZnSe have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Wide stripe gain-guided devices have been fabricated from several such wafers. These devices exhibit room-temperature pulsed threshold current densities as low as 630 A/cm2 and threshold voltages less than 9 V. Using a novel self-aligned process that results in a planar surface, buried-ridge laser diodes have also been fabricated. These devices have demonstrated room-temperature threshold currents as low as 2.5 mA, which is more than a factor of 50 lower than that of any previously reported II-VI laser diode. Room-temperature operation at duty factors up to 50% has been demonstrated. The far-field patterns from these devices indicate single lateral mode operation, suitable for diffraction-limited applications, such as optical data storage.

Notes: We report 3 cases of severe burns in children in which eccrine squamous syringometaplasia (ESS) was found in skin biopsies taken 10 days after the trauma occurred. Microscopic examination showed partial or total necrosis of the epidermis, focal dermal necrosis and squamous metaplasia in eccrine ducts. These cases appear to be the first reported instances of ESS as an early consequence of severe burns.
