    Notes: Summary The construction of a laser-beam-guide system for application in the nasal cavity is presented. An Ar+-laser beam of 1–3 W is conducted to the end tube of 4 mm diameter using two movable arms connected with two rotating mirrors. The beam diameter at the exit of the system is 0.7 mm. The technical procedure for the application of the laser beam on the lower human turbinates is described. Only surface anesthesia was necessary, and no bleeding occured. Over all the time of observation of 6 months, the patients were free of symptoms. The laser procedure is compared with other surgical techniques. Further, the morphological changes after laser irradiation and the symptomatology of laser surgery in the case of vasomotor rhinitis is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Using an argonlaser with a power of 1–100 W experiments on incision and coagulation of tissue are described for different focussing conditions. The laser power for performing laser surgery on the lower human turbinates, the tongue and the vocal cords is determined. For laser application on the turbinates a power of 2 W is sufficient for coagulation of tissue. Higher powers are necessary for laser incision of the tongue. The bloodless procedure is demonstrated in animal experiments performing a hemiglossectomy on the tongue of the anesthezised rabbit. The advantages of laser surgery are discussed. The macroscopical changes of the tissue after laser irradiation is described and possible clinical applications are mentioned.

    Notes: Abstract Using newly available values for the relevant cross sections the electron energy at maximum laser power at 488 nm was calculated to ∼6 eV, independent of discharge current. Agreement exists between theory and a re-evaluation of experiments. To check the calculations also other Ar-laser plasma parameters were determined and compared with experiments.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung In 30 Gelenkpunktaten traumatischer, degenerativer oder rheumatischer Genese wurden die Antistreptolysinreaktion, die Antistaphylosinreaktion, die Streptokokken-L-Agglutination, der Waaler-Rose-Test, der Latex-Fixationstest und die Agglutinationen mit sensibilisierten Menschenerythrocyten durchgeführt. Die Werte wurden mit den entsprechenden Befunden im Serum verglichen. Die Reaktionen ergaben im wesentlichen übereinstimmende Titer im Serum und in der Gelenkflüssigkeit bzw. gering erniedrigte Titer im Punktat. Nur in einem Fall konnte ein wesentlich höherer Titer im Punktat bei allen Reaktionen gefunden werden. Bei den Fällen mit primär chronischer Polyarthritis waren die Rheumafaktorteste sowohl im Serum als auch im Punktat eindeutig positiv. Die Bedeutung der antistreptolysin- und antistaphylosinpositiven Fälle, auch der traumatischen und degenerativen Gelenkerkrankungen, wurde diskutiert, ebenso die wiederholt zweifelhaften oder schwach positiven Werte der Streptokokken-L-Agglutination. Auf gutachterliche Probleme der vergleichenden rheumaserologischen Serumund Punktatuntersuchung wird kurz eingegangen.

The maximum laser output power available in the two arrangements is computed in dependence of various parameters neglecting saturation mechanisms.     Notes: Summary During irradiation with an Ar+- and Kr+-laser the temperature rise in living and dead tissue was measured in various depths. The contribution of the blood flow to the heat transport during irradiation was found to be small. The influence of the different depths of penetration and backscattering at the blue-green Ar+- and the red Kr+-radiation was investigated. The measurements compared with theory show reasonable agreement for an one-dimensional model below 100° C. The results are discussed with respect to laser application in medicine.

    Notes: Abstract Third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of different crystals have been measured relative to LiNbO3 by observing collinear phase-matched difference frequency generationω 1=2ω 2−ω 4. The two incident light waves have been produced by a ruby laser (ω 2,λ 2=694.3 nm) and by induced Raman scattering (ω 4,λ 4=765.8 nm). With noncollinear phase-matching the number of nonlinear processes and the possibilities to determine nonlinear coefficients is much larger than in the collinear case. Therefore the theory of Raman-type third order interactions has been extended to noncollinear propagation of the interacting waves. The theory has been tested experimentally for CdS.
