Notes: [Auszug] In agreement with the results of Williams on the stannic chloride catalysed reaction, we find that (1) the polystyrene formed is equivalent to the mono-styrene consumed, (2) the polymers formed are of low molecular weight, (3) the overall activation energy appears to be small. On the other hand, ...

Notes: Summary Compound action potentials evoked by electrical stimulation in the brainstem of anaesthetized, paralyzed cats and rabbits were recorded distally in the carotid sinus nerve. The latencies of the components of the responses were indicative of fibres with conduction velocities between 0.5 and 32 m/s. These include both myelinated and unmyelinated fibres. Using histological reconstructions of the ‘responsive sites’, the termination of the primary afferent fibres of the sinus nerve within the medulla was mapped. In both cat and rabbit these responsive sites were restricted to thedorsomedial medulla in the vicinity of the NTS 0–3 mm rostral to the obex. Although in the cat the fast conducting myelinated fibres (conduction velocities 〉12.5 m/s) were discretely localized to the ventrolateral area of the NTS, the slower conducting myelinated and unmyelinated fibres were found more diffusely, spreading into areas dorsal and medial to the NTS. In the rabbit the terminals of all types of fibre were mainly confined to the NTS although some C fibres appeared to be grouped in the juxta-alar region. Responses were never evoked from the medial reticular formation or nucleus ambiguus in either cats or rabbits. The organization of the sinus nerve input to the medulla is discussed in the light of these results.

Notes: It is now possible to do molecular weight distribution of polymeric material almost as fast as you can put them in solution. μSYRAGEL® has opened a new era in the determination of molecular weight distribution of polymers. With operational efficiencies of 800 plates/min., one can obtain a molecular weight distribution in 15 mins. Combining three of the newest advances in liquid chromatography - solvent delivery, septumless injection, and μSYRAGEL - now makes it possible to use molecular weight distribution as a quality control tool in polymerization and fabrication. The reproducibility of the molecular weight distribution is now good enough that overlays can be done from the raw data. The chromatograms can be used right off the recorder. The reproducibility of the weight average and number average molecular weight is 2-3 percent.

Notes: The sedimentation constants and diffusion coefficients of sodium polymethacrylate and of polymethacrylic acid have been determined at various concentrations of polymer and of added electrolyte and the nature of the charge effects is considered. A ratio y = (molarity of added electrolyte)/(grundmolarity of polymer) is used to obtain S20 at y = ∞ when the polyelectrolyte is assumed to be uncharged. The variation of the effective radius with y is considered not to be due to asymmetry but to the open network nature of the polyelectrolyte coil. The sedimentation constant of unionized polymethacrylic acid is determined and also the variation of sedimentation constant with degree of ionization.
