Notes: Abstract Computed tomography has provided a new dimension in the roentgenologic evaluation of the abdomen. Normal structures not visible on conventional examinations are clearly identified. Abnormalities are recognized by their alterations in anatomic form or by their effect on tissue absorption values. Our early experience suggests that in the abdomen computed tomography will be most valuable in detecting lesions in those sites least accessible to conventional roentgenographic methods such as the liver, spleen, pancreas and retroperitoneum.

Notes: This article describes a new experimental and analytical method for determining the specific heat and thermal coductivity of plastic materials. This method arrives at these temperature-dependent properties by analyzing the thermal history of a slab of the plastic material. The procedure is as follows: 1) A partial differential equation model of the heat flow through the slab is established a priori. 2) A varying heat flux is a applied to the slab, and temperature readings throughout the plastic are recorded at fixed time intervals. 3) This temperature data is fed into a digital computer (along with the established mathematical model) and the required specific heat and thermal conductivity values are extracted. The extraction is done by using the maximum likelihood system identification technique.

Notes: An improved macroscopic model for predicting the strength of a composite laminate containing a circular notch is developed. Two constants are introduced which uniquely determine the notch sensitivity of a given material. A superposition method for the notched strength of composite laminates is developed which allows data for arbitrary materials and laminate configurations to be superimposed upon a single master curve. The influence of material orthotropy upon notched strength is discussed. A relative notch sensitivity parameter is introduced which allows quantification of the notch sensitivity of a given composite material system, stacking sequence, or laminate configuration.

Notes: Numerous simple compounds have been shown to be capable of accelerating the photo-oxidation of polyethylene upon exposure to wavelengths near 300 nanometers. Probable mechanisms of photo-initiation by the principal classes of degradation-promoting additives are discussed.

Notes: This paper describes a novel application of thermomechanical analysis. Observation and measurement of the thermal recovery of stresses induced in oriented PVC by stretching at elevated temperature is achieved by the modification of a commercial TMA instrument. Employment of an electronic signal differentiation system, in combination with this instrument, permits the simultaneous recording of the rate of shrinkage as a function of temperature. Specific examples are given which demonstrate the performance of the instrument and illustrate its application to problems of practical interest, such as effects of stretching and annealing conditions on shrinkage behavior.

Notes: As an extension of previous studies on the total synthesis of (2R,4′R,8′R)-α-tocopherol (1) [1] [2], (S)-(-)-2-(6-benzyloxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman)acetic acid (6), a pivotal intermediate, possessing the absolute configuration required for construction of 1 was prepared by optical resolution of the racemic modification 11. the latter substance was obtained by two routes, one emanating from the hydroxy acetal 7 [1] and the other based upon the Lewis acid mediated cycloaddition of trimethylhydroquinone to rac.-3-hydroxy-3-methylpent-4-en-l-yl acetate (16) giving rac. ethyl 2-(6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman)acetate (12).

Notes: A segmented polyether urethane was used as the blood contacting surface in a series of 10 heart assist devices implanted in calves for periods up to 35 weeks. At termination, each was examined to correlate blood compatibility and device performance with surface properties, chemical purity, physical stability and affinity for lipid absorption.

Notes: Reaction of trimethyl-hydroquinone with methyl vinyl ketone in acidic methanol gave rac.-2-methoxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-6-ol (8). This acetal was converted in four steps to rac.-(6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-2-yl)acetic acid (13). Acid 13 was readily resolved with α-methyl-benzylamine to give the (S)-enantiomer 14. Treatment of the unwanted (2 R)-isomer with acid regenerated 13, thus leading to an efficient use of this compound. Employing a side chain derived from phytol, 14 was converted to (2R, 4′R, 8′R)-α-tocopherol (1d, ‘natural’ vitamin E). A reaction sequence from 14 involving two highly stereoselective Claisen rearrangements has provided the first total synthesis of (2R,'E,7′E)-α-tocotrienol (2d).

Notes: Solution crystallization is a complex process involving simultaneous heat and mass transfer in a multiphase, multicomponent system. Solutions in which solids are suspended are thermodynamically unstable - they can fluctuate between the socalled metastable and labile states. Traces of impurities can influence the nucleation and growth kinetics considerably. Hence it is understandable that crystallization has often been regarded as an art rather than a science. However it has been possible to summarize several of the complex interrelationships, in part quantitatively. This is illustrated for a number of examples, and the phenomena discussed regarding their relevance to industrial practice.
