Notes: Abstract Almost pure andradite and intermediate members of the andradite-grossular series (gros40–49, and 47–54, py0–3, alm0–3, spess0–2, hydrogarnet0–3), often framboidal in habit, are widespread in metabasites including lavas, minor intrusions, and volcanic sandstones and breccias metamorphosed under prehnite-pumpellyite and pumpellyite-actinolite facies conditions, possibly extending into the zeolite facies. Coexisting phases include iron-rich epidotes (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=22–34), pumpellyite, prehnite, actinolite, and chlorite, electron microprobe analyses of which are given, as well as quartz, albite, and calcite. Zoisite (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=1–5) and iron-poor epidote (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=11–18) occur in 2 rocks in pseudomorphs after plagioclase together with more iron-rich epidote, but not in close association with the garnets. Coexisting pumpellyite is iron-rich (FeO* 9–14%) in the prehnite-pumpellyite facies and iron-poor (FeO* 5%) in the pumpellyiteactinolite facies. Chlorites and actinolites vary widely and sympathetically in FeO/MgO+FeO ratio. Andradite is also described from a stilpnomelane-actinolite-hematite-bearing andradite quartzite of the pumpellyite-actinolite facies. Conditions of formation involved temperatures of 300 to 400 ° or less, at pressures up to a few kilobars. A wide range of oxygen fugacities is possible, but $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ in the fluid phase was low. Grandite and chlorite are incompatible in the pumpellyite-actinolite and greenschist facies in the presence of quartz but the 2 minerals occur together in some pumpellyite-actinolite facies assemblages as a result of incomplete reaction and/or local deficiency in silica. In the greenschist facies the association is replaced by epidote-actinolite±hematite and sodic amphibole. Whereas at medium to high grades of metamorphism andradite and grandite are characteristic of skarns irrespective of $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ , at very low grades they are found in mafic volcanic rocks and volcanogenic sediments as well as in certain cherty rocks of unusual composition, rodingites, and serpentinites, where $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ was very low.

Notes: Abstract Although remnants of a Permian volcanic arc in the South Island of New Zealand have hitherto been considered to comprise a single volcanostratigraphic unit, recent work in the southern part of the arc has revealed the presence of two lithologically distinct terranes, only one of which is definitely Permian in age. Major and trace element analyses of representative specimens show that these terranes are geochemically distinct. Comparison with modern volcanic arcs indicates that this ancient arc in the South Island was a paired arc system made up of primitive island arc tholeiites to the east and more evolved andesitic rocks to the west.

Notes: Abstract This paper studies some classical three-dimensional field theories for which the ranges of the field variables are a 3-sphere, a 2-sphere, the symplectic group,Sp(n), the special orthogonal group,SO(3), and theS 4,1 space of general relativistic metrics. The main result is the proof that these theories admit half-odd-integer spin, so that the 1-kink states are classical analogs of fermion states.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the situation in which the topology of space (or space-time) changes to produce a new manifold that is cobordant with, but not necessarily of the same homotopy type as, the original manifold. The relevance to kink field theories is discussed. It is shown that whenever the concept of degree of mapping is applicable then the degree is conserved under the bordism relation. This has the consequence that certain (topological) fermions arising in general relativity are always conserved in number, even when changes in topology are permitted.

Notes: Abstract Consideration is given to achieving test conditons in which linear elastic fracture mechanics may be employed to measure toughness in these rather ductile materials. This is achieved by testing wide specimens (100 mm) and these are employed to measureK c over a wide range of temperatures for materials with several rubber levels. It is shown that bothK c and the yield stress are determined by the extent of crazing and that, at the low rates used here, the full crazing capacity of the polystyrene is utilized by the addition of about 1% of rubber.

Notes: Abstract Fracture toughness tests were performed on specially prepared specimens taken from a single tree. These were kiln dried, machined to various thicknesses and then sets of them conditioned to various moisture contents. It was found that about half the specimens were rejected because of warping and splitting for thicknesses greater than 10 mm, but below this the rejection rate decreased. Fracture toughness values showed thickness variations in the kiln dried state, but the toughness decreased and became constant when the moisture content was changed. An explanation is proposed in terms of residual stresses induced by the drying which increases the toughness and constraint stresses which cause a decrease. A characteristic length of the annual ring spacing seems appropriate in defining the various transitions.

Notes: Abstract Fatigue tests have been conducted on polystyrene in air at different mean stress conditions and also over the temperature range−60 to 60°C using notched specimens. In addition, some tests were performed with the specimens immersed in a detergent and in a corn oil. The data were first represented on a conventional log ΔK-log da/dN plot to determine the Paris law parameters and how these varied with mean stress, temperature and environment. Considerable variations were noted but no useful pattern could be discerned. The data were then analysed using a recently proposed two-stage line plastic zone model so that a crack tip zone stress and a fatigue damage factor could be found. These stresses were found to be very high in air and to increase with increasing mean stress, and this is attributed to a high degree of constraint at the crack tip. There was an abrupt change in σc at about 20° C which, it is suggested, is caused by the onset of crazing due to the presence of a loss peak. Associated changes in K c were also noted. In environments, the stresses were much smaller and agreed with those obtained in static fracture, suggesting that crazes are formed in environments prior to, and not during, fatigue crack growth. The stress reduction factor, α, remained constant at about 0.2 with both temperature and environment.

Notes: Abstract Panels of PMMA having edge cracks at an angle to applied load were tested in tension and bending. Direction of initial crack growth and load to failure were recorded. Stress analysis of each test configuration was performed, and the maximum hoop stress and minimum strain energy density criteria were used to predict failure data. Reasonable correlation between experiment and theory was realised, but with little basis for discriminating between the two failure criteria.
