Notes: The homotopy properties of gravity in 1+1 dimensions are shown to imply the existence of structures analogous to the Finkelstein–Misner kinks of general relativity. A formalism is developed for the construction of kink metrics and a number of simple kink solutions for the (1+1)-dimensional equations are presented−including an n-kink solution that is locally transformable to the usual de Sitter solution and a one-kink solution that is locally transformable to one of the standard FLRW solutions. The relationship between the kink count and the hypersurface decomposition of the space-time manifold is explained in detail.

Notes: A homotopy classification scheme is developed for Lorentz metrics that are defined on (2+1)-dimensional space-times of various topologies. The "kink number,'' in the sense of the Finkelstein–Misner kink number in higher dimensions, is discussed, and examples are presented of kink metrics that satisfy the Einstein field equations in 2+1 dimensions.

Notes: A controlled trial was carried out on 120 healthy patients presenting for elective surgery. The patients were divided randomly into three groups, which received respectively, 50 mg ranitidine, 100 mg ranitidine, or 300 mg cimetidine intramuscularly at least 45 minutes before operation. Following induction of anaesthesia, a nasogastric tube was passed, the stomach contents aspirated and analysed for volume and pH. Thirteen per cent of cimetidine-treated patients had a gastric pH of 2.5 or less, compared to 8% of those given ranitidine 50 mg and 3% of those given ranitidine 100 mg; however, these differences were not statistically significant. No side effects attributable to the administration of either drug were observed. It is concluded that intramuscular administration of ranitidine or cimetidine is an effective method of reducing the number of patients at risk of acid aspiration during anaesthesia. However, neither drug eliminates the risk of acid aspiration in all patients. and thus careful anaesthetic technique to protect the airway remains essential.

Notes: Mobility changes were measured at temperatures from 15 to 305 K in n-GaAs van der Pauw samples irradiated by fast reactor neutrons. The inverse mobility values, obtained from the variable temperature Hall measurements were fitted using the relation μ−1=AT−3/2+BT3/2. The inverse mobility was found to increase as a result of neutron irradiations over the whole range of temperature; the increase is attributed to the increased scattering from neutron induced charged defects. The values of A found by the least square fitting were used to estimate the increased scattering effect from neutron-induced ionized defects after each step of irradiation. It is concluded that in order to explain the experimental results presented here, the creation of multiply charged defects must be considered.

Notes: The changes in electrical properties of n-GaAs as a result of irradiations with fast neutrons have been studied. Epitaxial layers doped with Si at concentrations in the range 1.35×1015 to 1.599×1016 cm−3 were irradiated with reactor neutron fluences up to 1.31×1015 cm−2. When the changes in carrier concentration, Hall mobility, and resistivity were more than 25% of their initial values, nonlinear dependence on neutron fluence was apparent. New theory is proposed which explains the changes in electrical properties in terms of rates of trapping and release of charges. A theoretical relationship is derived for the change in carrier concentration as a function of neutron fluence and doping level. A linear relationship between neutron fluence and Fermi level shift was found to be consistent with the observed changes in carrier concentration.

Notes: The curvature and Einstein tensor are computed for a metric having one or more kinks (solitons) present. It is pointed out that the components of the fluid velocity four-vector can be identified in a natural way with certain parameters present in the metric. Making this identification, a number of hydrodynamical quantities are computed.

Notes: Two exact solutions of the Einstein field equations are presented, each having a Finkelstein–Misner kink. The first of these has a perfect fluid interior and a vacuum exterior. The equation of state is ρ=−p=C (where C is a constant), which is the same as that found in inflationary models.
