Notes: Summary The SPSS computer program was used to evaluate the data recorded in 162 patients respirated for 2–28 days after abdominal surgery; 115 items were recorded for each patient. Lethality (130 patients) was 80 percent (42% cardiac insufficiency, 21%, septic shock, 20% pulmonary insufficiency). Even patients over 70 years of age can survive long-term respirator therapy. There is no correlation between the duration of respirator therapy and mortality, but mortality is related to the duration of surgery, blood supply, and the last creatinine and bilirubin levels and the last platelet count before respirator therapy is instituted.
