Summary In recent years repeated attempts have been made to determine the origin of the piezoelectricity in poly (vinylidene fluoride). To this aim specific experiments, in particular poling with “blocking” electrodes, have been carried out. Here the author will propose a new interpretation of these experiments, whereby - in agreement with other authors - the co-operative orientation of the dipoles in crystals of modification I is taken to be the cause of the piezoelectricity. Until now it has not, however, been taken into account that the local electrical field under the influence of which this orientation occurs, can be affected by the migration of ions in the polymer film.

Zusammenfassung In den letzten Jahren wurde wiederholt versucht, durch gezielte Experimente, insbesondere durch Polen mit „blockierenden” Elektroden, die Ursache der Piezoelektrizität in Polyvinylidenfluorid herauszufinden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine neue Interpretation dieser Experimente vorgeschlagen, wobei als eigentliche Ursache der Piezoelektrizität - im Einklang mit anderen Autoren - die kooperative Orientierung der Dipole in der Kristallmodifikation I angesehen wird. Es wurde jedoch bisher nicht berücksichtigt, daß das lokale elektrische Feld, unter dessen Einwirkung diese Orientierung vor sich geht, beeinflußt werden kann durch die Wanderung von Ionen im Polymerfilm.
