Notes:
Summary In 15 rats, silastic implants were replaced by bone, cartilage, and dermal grafts after 6 to 8 weeks. At the same time, part of these grafts were also implanted outside the sheaths. The grafts were examined 6 to 9 months later. Within the silastic induced sheaths, only the vitality of the dermal grafts was impaired to any degree. Bone and cartilage took as well inside the induced sheaths as in a normal wound-bed. Since there were only thin membranes of the normal reaction type I observed in all animals, after 6 to 8 weeks, no conclusion can be drawn concerning the behaviour of the grafts within a thicker, more severe reaction type sheath.
