    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Preliminaries of the paper are a recollection of the basic relations and a short survey on the familiar methods for the conversion of fictitious flow curves (consistency curves) into real ones (i.e. plots of the rheological equations) as well as an exemplification by applying these to channel-, tube-, torsional and Couetteflow. After that the method of representative viscosity, up to now only introduced as an approximation method, is generalized to an exact method. It may be interpreted as an in general non-linear transformation of the abscissa of the fictitious viscosity curve, the hitherto known technique coming out to be a linear approximation. The exact method is applied to the above mentioned viscometric flows. Besides expansions of the fictitious flow curve into power series the special rheological equations of power-law (Ostwald-de Waele) fluids, Rabinowitsch- and Reiner-Philippoff-fluids as well as of plastic materials of theHerschel-Bulkley and, as a special case,Bingham types are enclosed for illustration, too. By this it becomes evident that the method loses its specific advantages largely as soon as non-linear transformations are required. On the other hand the quality of the linear approximation may considerably be increased if one introduces—in contrast to the original concept — only a few informations which can simply be obtained from the flow curve, e.g. the average inclination from a double-logarithmic plot. This is exemplified with a fluid showing marked shear thinning flow properties.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Nach Bereitstellung der Grundbeziehungen und einem kurzen Überblick über die bekannten Methoden zur Umrechnung von scheinbaren in wahre Fließkurven, die hier beispielhaft auf die Kanal-, Rohr-, Torsions- und Couette-Strömung angewendet werden, wird die ursprünglich als Approximationsverfahren eingeführte Methode der repräsentativen Viskosität zu einer exakten Methode verallgemeinert. Diese Methode läßt sich als eine im allgemeinen nicht-lineare Transformation der Abszisse der scheinbaren Viskositätskurve interpretieren, von der das bisher bekannte Approximationsverfahren eine lineare Näherung darstellt. Die exakte Methode wird auf die oben genannten Viskosimeterströmungen angewendet, wobei außer Potenzreihenentwicklungen für die scheinbaren Fließkurven zur Veranschaulichung auch die speziellen Fließgesetze der Ostwald-de Waele-, Rabinowitsch- und Reiner-Philippoff-Flüssigkeiten, sowie der plastischen Stoffe nachHerschel-Bulkley, eingeschlossen den Spezialfall der Bingham-plastischen Stoffe, in die Untersuchung einbezogen werden. Dabei erkennt man, daß die Methode ihre spezifischen Vorteile weitgehend einbüßt, sobald nicht-lineare Transformationen benötigt werden. Man kann allerdings die Approximationsgüte der linearen Transformation u. U. noch erheblich steigern, wenn man — entgegen dem ursprünglichen Konzept — einige aus der scheinbaren Fließkurve ganz einfach abzulesende Informationen, z. B. die mittlere Steigung bei doppelt-logarithmischer Auftragung, in Ansatz bringt. Dies wird am Beispiel einer Flüssigkeit mit ausgeprägter Scherentzähung demonstriert.
