Notes: Summary In 193 patients who underwent general surgery, a wound closure with buried ends and subcuticular running suture was done. As suture material, the synthetic and absorbable Polyglactin 910 (Vicryl®) was used. The patients were followed up from 3 to 6 months after operation. A good cosmetic result was obtained for incisions that parallel the natural lines of cleavage in the skin and that are in areas under little tension, e. g. resection of goiter, appendectomy, and herniotomy. Sixty percent of the transrectal incisions for cholecystectomy and paramedian incisions for operation on the stomach or the gut developed broad, sometimes hypertrophic scars.
