Notes: An analysis is presented of the obstetric histories of 50 women with acute porphyria, comprising 39 with acute intermittent porphyria, 3 with variegate porphyria and 8 with hereditary coproporphyria. Fifty-four per cent of the women with acute intermittent porphyria had an acute attack of porphyria in pregnancy and/or the puerperium. Only one maternal death was recorded. One patient with variegate porphyria and two with hereditary coproporphyria had an attack related to pregnancy. The total fetal wastage was 13 per cent. The babies born to mothers with acute intermittent porphyria, who experienced an acute attack during pregnancy, were smaller than those in which no such attack occurred (P〈0·001). In 13 non-porphyric primigravidae there was a rise in urinary excretion of 8-aminolaevulinic acid, porphobilinogen and coproporphyrin up to the 28th week of gestation. It is probable that pregnancy has some deleterious effects in acute porphyria but the prognosis of the porphyric pregnancy is much better than the literature suggests.

Notes: Leucocyte ascorbic acid was measured in 79 pregnant women in the 34th to 38th week of gestation and on the first, and third or fifth days post partum. No differences were found for time of year or age of the subjects. There was a significantly lower vitamin C status in social classes IV and V. The leucocyte ascorbic acid concentration fell significantly on the first day post partum and rose again to initial values by the fifth day. In late pregnancy 40 per cent of all subjects had leucocyte ascorbic acid concentrations less than the lower limit of normal (100 nmol/l08 leucocytes). This rose to 75 per cent on the first day post partum.

Notes: Excess anticomplementary activity is common in the sera of patients with bronchiectasis (chronic bronchial suppuration). To identify the active components, Sephadex 6B gel filtration profiles of the sera of fourteen patients with bronchiectasis were obtained, six of which were subjected to detailed analysis for anticomplementary activity and IgG and IgM content. Anticomplementary serum from an individual patient with rheumatoid arthritis was similarly analysed as a positive control and sera from four healthy subjects as negative controls.Although some anticomplementary activity was monitored in association with monomeric IgG, in patients' sera activity was predominantly, and occasionally exclusively, associated with the region between the native IgM and IgG peaks. High molecular weight IgG was detected by immunodiffusion in these fractions of the sera from three patients with severe bronchiectasis, but was undetectable in that of the other three patients, in whom disease was mild. Only one of the four normal sera was anticomplementary, weak activity being distributed in the IgM, IgG and intermediate fractions. The data are interpreted to suggest the presence of immune complexes of IgG in the sera of patients with severe bronchiectasis. Failure to consistently detect IgG in column fractions exhibiting anticomplementary activity is probably a reflection of the superior sensitivity of the anticomplementary technique. Gel filtration properties indicate that the immune complexes are small, containing less than five molecules of IgG. Their possible role in the pathogenesis of bronchiectasis, or as a secondary response to chronic infection and pulmonary tissue damage, is discussed.

Notes: 1. The effects of δ-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) have been examined on the blood pressure of anaesthetized rats and pithed rats and on the perfusion pressure in isolated preparations of the rabbit ear artery.2. ALA has a hypotensive effect in both anaesthetized and pithed rats.3. In anaesthetized rats, the hypotensive response was produced with either continuous infusion or single injections of ALA, and was not blocked by hexamethonium, propanolol, phentolamine, atropine or mepyramine.4. In the pithed rat, ALA had no effect on the pressor response to nicotine.5. The hypotensive response to ALA could be counteracted by the pressor effect of adrenaline or noradrenaline. In pithed rats, the pressor response of vasopressin was reduced by ALA.6. Vasoconstrictor response of the isolated perfused rabbit ear artery to noradrenaline and sympathetic nerve stimulation were usually not affected by ALA, but in a few experiments they were increased. ALA produced an increase in perfusion pressure in a few experiments.7. Since ALA appears to cause an increase in capillary permeability, it is probable that the hypotensive effect is associated with capillary dilatation.

Notes: The average radius of platelet-like defects in crystals may be estimated by the non-destructive technique of X-ray topography of `spike' diffuse reflections, applicable to platelet radii several orders of magnitude smaller than the resolution limit of conventional X-ray topographic techniques. With the most favourable diffraction geometry, the diffuse topograph image may be regarded simply as the convolution of the platelet number density projected along the diffracted beam direction with the Airy diffraction intensity pattern appropriate to the radius of individual platelets. Different integrals of the Airy diffraction intensity profile are involved in photometric traverses of `spike' section topographs and of `spike' projection topographs. The required integrals are evaluated and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Experimentally injected anthracene (10 to 100 μg mussel-1) has been shown to induce dose-dependent lysosomal destabilisation and release of hexosaminidase in the digestive cells of Mytilus edulis after 24 h. This destabilisation was accompanied by cytological evidence of cytolysis of the digestive cells. The destabilising effect of 100 μg of injected anthracene persisted for 96 h with a return to the control condition by 168 h. These results are discussed in the context of environmental contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Notes: Summary Adriamycin and 5-fluorouracil were used to treat nineteen patients with metastatic carcinoma. There were different effects upon in vitro immune reactivity in those patients who responded, as compared to those who did not respond to this chemotherapy. Assays used to measure immune reactivity included total lymphocyte count, E and EAC rosettes, direct cellular cytotoxicity, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and PHA induced cytotoxicity against a Change cell target system. Both patient groups were immuno-depressed prior to treatment. Successful therapy reduced this depression in “non-T” cell cytotoxicity and in E rosette number. In contrast, the non-responding patients exhibited further depression of “non-T” function as measured by direct cellular cytotoxicity and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity.
