Effect of urine pH on accumulation of gentamicin in the renal cortex of rats was studied following constant intravenous infusion, and single or repeated i.v. injections with gentamicin.2. The cortical uptake of gentamicin was moderately inhibited by urinary alkalinization due to sodium bicarbonate treatment, but was unaffected by acidification with ammonium chloride. The altered urinary pH had no effect on urinary excretion of gentamicin.3. An alkaline urine induced by acetazolamide injections failed to influence cortical accumulation of gentamicin. This effectmay be ascribed to ‘acidification’ of the proximal tubular fluid after carbonic anhydrase inhibition, even though the final urine was alkaline.4. Nephrotoxicity resulting from chronic treatment of gentamicin was ameliorated by concomitant sodium bicarbonate administration.5. In conclusion, the intratubular pH of the proximal tubule is a factor which influences the cortical uptake of gentamicin, probably by means of changing the cationic nature of the molecule and, therefore, reduced binding with the luminal membrane.

    Notes: In laboratory tests, eggs and young larvae of Spodoptera littoralis were exposed to cold treatments of varying temperature and duration in an attempt to find an alternative to the current quarantine treatment of 10 days’ storage at 1–2°C, which damages some imported chrysanthemum cuttings. The alternative cold regimes tested, i.e., 1°C for four to eight days, is for seven days, 4°C for four to six, eight and ten days, and 7°C for seven days, did not eradicate S. littoralis. Differences in response to cold were observed both between strains and within developmental stages of S. littoralis.

    A MULTIENZYME TECHNIQUE FOR ESTIMATING PROTEIN DIGESTIBILITY (1977)

    Notes: An in vitro method using a multienzyme system for the estimation of protein digestibility has been developed. The multienzyme system consists of trypsin, chymotrypsin and peptidase. It was found that the pH of a protein suspension immediately after 10 min digestion with the multienzyme solution was highly correlated with the in vivo apparent digestibility of rats. Regression analyses of 23 samples tested showed that the correlation coefficient between pH at 10 min and in vivo apparent digestibility was 0.90 with a standard error of estimate of 2.23. The regression equation was Y = 210.464 - 18.103, where “X” was the pH of protein suspension immediately after the 10 min digestion with the multienzyme solution. The most significant advantage of this in vitro method for predicting apparent protein digestibility was that it can be completed within 1 hr and with a high degree sensitivity. The method can detect the effects of trypsin inhibitor, chlorogenic acid, and heat treatment on protein digestibility. Strong buffer salts may affect the measurement of protein digestibility, but the buffering effects found in general food proteins and products tested did not create any problem with the procedure.

    Notes: A method for the determination of total porphyrins in beef biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles, in beef red bone marrow and in lamb biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles is reported. Tissues of decreasing levels of porphyrins were: red marrow, beef biceps femoris, beef semitendinosus, lamb biceps femoris, lamb semitendinosus. Protoporphyrin was the major, if not only, porphyrin present in the muscle and marrow samples.

    Notes: Summary In two different inquiries concerning the diagnosis of gastric cancer and especially early gastric cancer (E.G.C.) (comprising the years 1968–1977) we collected all over Europe 872,376 gastroscopies with 2832 E.G.C. (0.3%). For 739,360 gastroscopies a total of 39,953 gastric cancers was reported of which 2475 were E.G.C. (6.2%). One E.G.C. was found in 308 gastroscopies. The ulcerating types (IIc and III) were the most frequent ones. The antrum, including angulus and pylorus, and the Magenstraße may be considered as zones of predilection. 94% of all patients with an E.G.C. have had complaints for several months or years before. Gastro-intestinal bleeding is found in 11.4% of the patients over the age of 40.40% of E.G.C. were found in women. 60% in men. E.G.C. is the most frequent from the 6th to the 8th decade of age. Diagnosis of cancer is made by biopsy and/or cytology. The accuracy of diagnosis correlates with the number of biopsy particles from the lesion. A previous, carefully done X-ray examination increases the efficiency of gastroscopy in finding an E.G.C.

    Notes: The relationship between nearest-neighbour growth-disorder models and Ising models is described in detail. The growth model with only two-body interactions is shown to be equivalent, in section perpendicular to the growth direction, to a simple Ising model. Two approximate solutions for the growth model are compared with exact solutions of equivalent Ising models, where possible, and also with computer realizations; the behaviour of these approximate solutions is discussed.
