Notes: [Auszug] Smith and Purcell demonstrated4 that light is emitted when a high voltage electron beam moves parallel and close to a metallic optical diffraction grating in a direction perpendicular to the grating rulings (Fig. la). -The radiation has been explained physically in terms of the oscillations that ...

Notes: Flux pinning in the region of low perpendicular magnetic fields is shown to take place at the edge of granular Al films, by using external magnetic fields with spatial gradients. Both the temperature and magnetic field dependences of depinning currents due to edge pinning were measured. The experimental results suggest that the edge pinning arises from two contributions, depending in a different manner on the temperature and on the magnetic field. One is explained qualitatively by the magnetic pinning which is effective in the layer within a distance λ⊥ from the edge across which the fluxoids enter the film. Here λ⊥ is the penetration depth of the perpendicular magnetic field in the film. For the other contribution, which is greatest near the critical temperature, the nature of the pinning is not understood.

Notes: Summary Cycloscopy was performed in eyes with primary angle-closure glaucoma and non-glaucomatous wide-angle. In all eyes of primary angle-closure glaucoma, the ciliary processes were accessible through the small pupil by Cycloscopy with minimal or no indentation. In fellow eyes of the previously acute-attack eyes, the ciliary processes were visualized through the small pupil without indentation. On the contrary, in primary angle-closure glaucoma eyes the significant shallow chamber depth was seen in 66%, and the positive prone-position test in 41%. The results obtained seem to suggest that morphological changes of the ciliary processes might be causally related to the manifestation of primary angle-closure glaucoma, and that cycloscopy is a reliable diagnostic method.

Notes: Summary The lens, iris, and ciliary body from the eyes of patients with glaucoma with cataract were examined via electron microscopy, and the following results obtained. 1. Zonular bundles were encrusted with accumulations of pseudoexfoliative (PE) materials and fragmented zonular fibrils, especially on their lateral aspects. 2. PE materials ranged from 300 to 400 Å in width, consisting of several subunits about 100 Å wide. 3. Pigment epithelial cells of the iris and nonpigmented epithelial cells of the ciliary process occasionally contained many phagosomes engulfing pigment granules. 4. Near the ciliary process, degenerating zonular bundles were mostly replaced with PE materials and fragmented zonular fibrils, and a gradual transition was observed between them. From the above findings, it is probable that PE material might be mainly composed of degenerated zonular fibrils, which are presumed to be digested with lysosomal enzymes.
