Notes:
Summary The reaction between CuII and reducing sugars was studied with the aim of working out the reaction mechanism. The reaction between D(+)-glucose and the CuII-reagent according to Potterat-Eschmann was chosen as the model system. The main reaction products were identified as arabonic acid, ribonic acid, 3-deoxypentonic acids, erythronic acid, glyceric acid, glycolic acid and formic acid; traces of threonic acid, 2,4-dihydroxybutyric acid, 3-deoxyhexonic acid and hexonic acid could also be detected. The main products were determined quantitatively. The results lead to the formulation of a reaction mechanism, by which it was possible to calculate approximately the CuII/glucose ratio.
