Notes: Summary The local oxygen pressure of muscle tissue was measured in 10 patients with occlusive atherosclerosis and in 9 healthy volunteers using a micro-Pt-electrode. In 3 cases, the muscular pO2 values of an ischemic leg were compared to the non-ischemic leg of the same patient. In both groups, there was a statistically significant difference in the oxygen pressure of the muscle tissue in normal legs of volunteers as compared to the ischemic legs. Measurements of the local oxygen pressure in the muscle enables us to have a quantitative measure for the ischemic situation. It is a useful diagnostic method in patients suffering from ischemic claudication and seems to be an objective criterium of therapeutical methods.

Notes: Some techniques are surveyed of how to monochromatize synchrotron X-radiation and to eliminate harmonics in the most appropriate way. The theoretical estimates are compared with spectral intensity distribution measurements at DESY in Hamburg and found to be in good agreement.

Notes: A γ Compton experiment with an annular 241Am γ-source is described. The distribution of the primary intensity in the plane of the sample as well as the scattering angle distribution are evaluated by a Monte Carlo calculation to determine (together with the energy resolution) the total momentum resolution of the experiment. In order to probe the reliability of the experimental arrangement and of the data processing, experimental Compton profiles of water from samples of different thicknesses are compared with the results of an IUCr project.

Notes: [Auszug] ALTHOUGH the interpretation of Martinez and Colombo1 may be correct, their conclusions are based on uncertain evidence and an alternative explanation that fits within the classical scheme is equally plausible. Their argument rests entirely on the statement that "foetal haemoglobin (HbF) levels show ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A telemetry system for the study of wild ungulates is discribed, including collars, receivers, antennae and activity monitors. The system functions at frequencies of about 37 MHz. It was planned and developed for research in arduous mountain areas. Of particular interest, in addition to the transmitting distance and the accuracy of direction finding, is the method of recording activity. By means of a device which reacts to changes in the position of the animal's head, the frequency of the signal is varied. Thus it is possible to recognize several types of activity according to the behavior and movement of an animal. The signals are recorded and furnish detailed records of activity. 12 red deer and a male chamois, both free and in enclosures, have been studied up to now.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies suggested that orangutans have nonallelic structural genes for their γ chains, because either a threonyl or an alanyl residue may occupy position 135. Further investigation has now detected that position 75 may have either an isoleucyl or a valyl residue. From available evidence, the isoleucyl and threonyl residues are in one chain and the valyl and alanyl in the other. Orangutans appear to be homozygous for the two types of nonallelic genes.

Notes: Abstract Two sons of a previously reported Ghanaian homozygote for the hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) (Ringelhann et al., 1970) also are HPFH homozygotes. In addition, another unrelated adult Ghanaian homozygote has been detected. All of these Ghanaian homozygotes as well as three American Black HPFH homozygotes have the G γ A γ type of HPFH with a G γ to A γ ratio of about 3:2, in contrast to an Asiatic Indian homozygote who has the G γ type. Globin chain synthesis in HPFH homozygotes is unbalanced, with a γ/α ratio of 0.6 or less, whereas it is balanced in heterozygotes according to most reports.
