Summary The metals of the ammonium sulfide group are separated by thin layer chromatography and identified with MDCM and oxine. Variations of solvent mixtures yield a mobile phase that keeps the nickel zone on the chromatogram apart from the other metals and so permits the clean solution of this metal from the plate. Nickel gives (in chloroform) a yellow-green chelate with MDCM that serves for the speotrophotometric determination. Interferences by titanium and aluminium are averted by means of sodium fluoride. The method appears to be very suitable for the quantitative determination of small amounts of nickel either alone or in the presence of other metals of the 3rd group. The running time of the three given liquid phases lies between 40 and 65 minutes.
