    Notes: Summary Histochemical localizations of various substances in the hypothalamic neuro-secretory cells as well as neurohypophysis of the normal and stressed (scalded) garden lizards, Calotes versicolor suggest that the neurosecretory materials, secreted by the hypothalamic neurones may be a mucoprotein-lipoprotein complex which is finally stored in the neuro-hypophysis. Only the proteinaceous fraction of this complex appears to be released by the nerve terminals in the neurohypophysis under the stressed condition. Such suggestion implies a chemical transformation of neurosecretory substances after leaving the neurosecretory cell body.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird die nichtstationäre Wärmeleitung in einer in Öl abgeschreckten Kugel untersucht unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Einflusses von Radius und Wärmeleitfähigkeit der Kugel (Biot-Zahl) auf die Oberflächentemperatur. Das Problem ist hochgradig nichtlinear wegen der starken Abhängigkeit des Wärmeübergangskoeffizienten von der Oberflächentemperatur. Wärmeleitgleichung und Randbedingung werden in eine einzelne nichtlineare Volterra-Integralgleichung zweiter Art für die Oberflächentemperatur transformiert, die numerisch durch eine modifizierte schrittweise Approximation mit getrennter Näherung für den Kern gelöst wird. Ergebnisse für eine Anfangstemperatur der Kugel von 1144 K bei Abkühlung auf 317 K in einem weiten Bereich der Biot-Zahl werden mit der Näherung für unendliche Wärmeleitfähigkeit verglichen. Die größte Temperaturdifferenz zwischen dieser Näherung und den genauen Resultaten beträgt 24 K, 64 K und 144 K für die entsprechenden Biot-Zahlen 0,1, 1,0 und 10.
    Notes: Abstract Transient heat conduction in a solid sphere quenched in oil is studied. Specifically, the influence of radius and thermal conductivity of the sphere (Biot number) on the surface temperature is investigated. The problem is extremely nonlinear because the heat transfer coefficient is a strong function of the surface temperature. In the analysis, the transient heat conduction equation and boundary conditions are transformed into a singular nonlinear Volterra Integral equation of the second kind for the surface temperature. This equation is solved numerically by a modified successive approximation method and a separable kernel approximation. Results for a sphere initially at 1144 K and cooled to 317 K are obtained over a wide range of Biot numbers and are compared with the infinite thermal conductivity approximation. The maximum difference between the infinite thermal conductivity approximation and the exact results is 24 K, 64 K, and 144 K for Biot numbers 0.1, 1.0, 10.0, respectively.

    Notes: Summary For screening better types among 10 strains with the help of the D 2 statistic, an experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications. 10 plants in each plot were randomly selected and observations were recorded on final plant height, heading duration, effective tillers, number of grains per panicle, yield per plant and 100 grain weight. The observations were analyzed and found to be significant at 1% level. In the study of distance relations the contribution of grain number per panicle to D 2 values was found to be maximum. Again, this technique also helped in grouping the 10 strains into four clusters, viz. A, B, C and D, of which B possessed six strains out of 10; A possessed two and C and D one each. Group A comprised 2 selections from the same cross. Group D was composed of a selection from a cross involving Dular and Taichung Native-1 as parents. Group B possessed Dular, two selections from a cross involving Dular as one of the parents, Dharial and N.C.-1626. The constituents of A are expected to be transgressive segregates. Group A was maximally distantly related with D followed in order by C and B. The distance between B and C was small. Group D was found to be the best of all strains studied, followed by B, C and A.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Colchicin-Behandlung von vorgekeimten Knollen steigerte den Ernteetrag bei 17 der angeführten 20 Sorten. Bei manchen Sorten blieb diese Wirkung durch zwei aufeinanderfolgende Jahre in welchen die Knollen nach den verschiedenen Behandlungen gezogen wurden, erhalten, obwohl keine weitere Behandlung angewandt wurde. Die optimale Dauer der Behandlung war je nach den Sorten verschieden, ebenso das allgemeine Ansprechen auf die Behandlungen. Bei wenigen Sorten führte die Behandlung zu einer Ertragsdepression, währenddem bei anderen die Ertragserhöhung verzögert wurde. Bei 8 der 20 Sorten kamen Abnormitäten der Knollenform vor. Die Behandlung hatte keine Wirkung auf die Reife ausser in einigen Fällen in welchen eine Verspätung von 2 bis 3 Tagen verzeichnet wurde.
    Abstract: Résumé Le traitement de tubercules germés à la colchicine avant la plantation a fait augmenter le rendement de 17 des 20 variétés étudiées. Dans certaines variétés, cet effet se manifesta pendant les deux années successives où les tubercules soumis aux différents traitements furent cultivés, bien que nul autre traitement ne fût appliqué. La durée optimale du traitement variait d'une variété, à l'autre, de même que la réponse générale au traitement. Le traitement réduisit le rendement de quelques variétés, tandis que dans d'autres cas, l'augmentation du rendement se manifesta avec un certain retard. Dans 8 variétés sur 20, il fut constaté des anomalies de conformation des tubercules. Le traitement n'influençait pas la maturation, sauf dans quelques cas où il fut observé un retard de 2 ou 3 jours.
    Notes: Summary Colchicine treatment of sprouted tubers before planting increased yield in 17 out of the 20 varieties reported. In some varieties this effect was maintained in the two succeeding years in which the tubers from the various treatments were grown, although no further treatment had been given. The optimum duration of treatment varied between varieties as did overall response. Treatment depressed yield in a few varieties, while in others yield increase was delayed. In 8 out of the 20 varieties abnormalities in tuber shape occurred. Treatment had no effect on maturation except in a few cases where a retardation of 2 or 3 days was recorded.

    Notes: Summary Some of the hybrid seeds obtained by interspecific crosses show lack of proper development of seed parts like embryo or endosperm. If such seeds are sown, no plant is usually obtained. However, if the internal details of the seeds are known prior to sowing, embryo culture method may be resorted to for the under-developed seeds and the unfortunate loss of hybrid plants may probably be avoided. The use of X-ray photography was found to be very promising and was employed to assess the internal condition of the hybrid seeds obtained from the interspecific crossing programme, viz, 1. Oryza sativa × O. officinalis, 2. Abelmoschus esculentus × A. moschatus, 3. Lycopersicum esculentum × L. pimpinellifolium and 4. Solanum melongena × S. testiculatum. The special advantages of this technique are, that a. it is possible to know the internal development of F1 seeds without causing any damage to them; b. knowing the condition of the seed, adequate care could be provided to individual seeds as judged by the radiographs; c. it is a very quick and sure method which could be used by the geneticists and breeders in their distant crossing programmes.

    Notes: Abstract The currently known astronomical, chemical and magnetic data are not uniquely indicative of an extensively and globally molten Moon. We argue here for an accretional layering in the Moon, but at temperatures below solidus. The excess mass in the near side of the Moon compatible with a 2 km displacement in the center of mass relative to the centre of figure and the moment of inertia data is considered to be due to Fe-FeS liquid formation and inhomogeneous segregation. These Fe-FeS bodies, termed ‘fescons’, are shown to be capable of accounting for the presently available magnetization data, by acting as small regenerative dynamos with a time-stability less than that of the terrestrial equivalent. The chemical characteristics of the highly differentiated materials (KREEP, ‘granite’ etc.) are considered to be due to small scale localized melting caused by collisional events, from sources in which accessory phases play a significant role. Mare basalts are considered to be melts in the overlying material produced at a later time by40K radioactivity in the fescons. Some consequences of the present hypothesis are suggested. We conclude that these and other characteristics of the lunar materials are reconcilable with a ‘cold’ Moon such as discussed by Urey over the past two decades.

The second equation relating the time of coagulation with concentration of electrolyte originally proposed byBhattacharya and derived byGhosh fromReerink's equation has been verified with AlAsO4 sol following the method ofBhattacharya.
