    Slow evolution of transferrin and albumin in birds according to micro-complement fixation analysis (1974)

    Notizen: Summary Rabbit antisera were prepared to purified ovotransferrin from chicken (order Galliformes) and red-winged blackbird (order Passeriformes) and to purified serum albumin from chicken and rhea (order Rheiformes). Quantitative microcomplement fixation was used to compare these proteins immunologically with those of representatives of all 27 orders of birds. The average interordinal immunological distances were 123 units for transferrin and 53 units for albumin. Extensive intraordinal comparisons of transferrin among 51 species within the order Galliformes and 33 species within the order Passeriformes were also carried out. Values ranging from 0–75 immunological distance units were found within each order. Rabbit antisera to purified alligator albumin were also prepared and shown to react with representatives of all 27 orders of birds, the average immunological distance being 166 units. When the data presented here are considered in relation to the fossil record of birds, it appears that transferrin and albumin have evolved more slowly in birds than in other vertebrates. If prevailing interpretations of the fossil record are correct, transferrin has evolved 2–4 times as fast in mammals and snakes as in birds, while serum albumin has evolved about 3 times as fast in mammals, iguanids, crocodilians, and frogs as in birds. Published immunological and sequence comparisons of lysozyme and cytochromec are also consistent with a slower rate of evolution in birds than in other vertebrates. The implications of a general slowdown in the evolution of bird proteins are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The bar-pressing behavior of hungry rats was maintained by a fixed-ratio schedule of food reinforcement. At 5 and 12 days after pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), a subtreshold dose (20 μg/kg) of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was found to disrupt this behavior. No such disruption occurred when PCPA pretreatment was followed by either a distracting external stimulus (tone) or a low dose of D-amphetamine (0.3 mg/kg). Sensitivity to LSD was apparently unaffected by pretreatment with α-methyl-p-tyrosine (AMPT).

    Notizen: The glass transition temperature Tg of partially sulfonated polystyrene has been measured dilatometrically as a function of degree of sulfonation. A semitheoretical relationship between Tg and degree of sulfonation has been derived by treating the strong-acid polymer as a highly polar copolymer of styrene and styrenesulfonic acid. The Tg of copolymer has been found to increase linearly up to 0.15 weight fraction of styrene-sulfonic acid wA as given by: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ T_g = T_{gB} + 200w_A $\end{document} where TgB is the glass transition temperature of loosely crosslined (1%) polystyrene matrix. Our experimental results agree well with theoretical relations developed on the basis of the iso-free-volume state of glass transition applied to sulfonated polystyrene. The marked linear increase in copolymer Tg with the styrenesulfonic acid is accounted for by the effect of progressively higher intermolecular forces due to the highly polar sulfonic acid substituents.

    Notizen: Four pure hydroperoxides were evaluated as initiators for the polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at 5°C. These materials were the meta and para isomers of mono- and dihydroperoxy-diisopropylbenzene. Results showed that the monohydroperoxides produced somewhat faster reactions than a control hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide. Response to mercaptan level adjustments was good, providing polymer with a Mooney viscosity in the 50 to 60 range. The reaction rate with the dihydroperoxides was slower, but again provided polymer with a satisfactory viscosity. Basic physical property measurements on polymers prepared with the pure hydroperoxides or control hydroperoxides showed only minor differences. It is anticipated that these differences can be eliminated by small adjustments in the compound recipe.

    Notizen: Phosphorus-containing polyurethans of the formula were prepared by interfacial polymerization of 1,4-butanebischloroformate and p-xylylene-α, α-bischloroformate with bis(m-aminophenyl)alkylphosphine oxides. The polymers had number average molecular weights up to 8600. A test of the stability to alkali of one of the polymers (R=CH3, X=1,4-C6H4) showed it to be as resistant as nonphosphorus analogs, and a film of this polymer exhibited self-extinguishing properties. Thermal degradation of the phosphorus polymers, which began at approximately 230°C, occurred by an initial first-order process, releasing chiefly carbon dioxide. The energies of activation for the maximum rates of weight loss were 31-37 kcal/mole.
